short 45-70

since ive gotton the talo 357 im now thinking about the talo 45-70.this is for the guys with the short barrel 45-70.how much pain am i in for with the short barrel 45-70.i would use either the rem trap door loads or the hornady LE.i have a 12ga tracker  an this thing kills me with sabot slugs in it,i dont like the recoil at all.how would the talo compare to my 12ga.

A 1oz slug weighs 437.5grains. Winchester loads theirs to 1600fps. Remington loads the 45/70 400gr bullet to 1200fps. The rifle is a little heavier than the shotgun so the recoil will be less. Load that same 400gr bullet up to 1700fps or so and the recoil is gonna be close to the same. It's true, there is no free lunch.

A good recoil pad would work wonders though.  It would still kick hard, but wouldn't hurt hopefully.

I have an 18.5" 45/70 and I have shot both the Hornday LEs and the Remington 405s Express Loads out of this gun, both with and without a slip on recoil pad.  My gun has the straight stock and no factory pad.  The recoil, to me, is far less than my Beretta 303 12 ga, shooting Remington Buckhammers or for than matter Remington Sluggers.  To me, and my shoulder, the Remingtons 405s are milder than the Hornady 325s.  If you fill the stock bolt channel with lead shot this will cheaply calm the gun down a bit, but tends to make a "shorty" a little butt heavy.  If you reload you can cook up some loads that are milder than the factory offerings.

Good luck and I would go for the Talo 45/70, it is a nice looking gun.

When 1450fps is the optimum speed, you can build all kinds of rounds with fair to little recoil.

Even my stout rounds are no where close to my bolt gun.

My 45-70s aren't shorties the winchester and remington factory loads feel about like a 20ga field load the hornady LE are much more stout. I have tracker II 12ga and shot some hornady SSTs out of it a week or so ago and it deffinately let you know you pulled the trigger and I'm not very recoil shy.

spikehorn that is what im talking about.i have the same gun an one time i bought some active 3 inch slugs that i got a deal on for $2 a box,i shot it twice with those an the rest i let friends shoot when i got the guns out the looks id get when they touched those off was funny.if the 45-70 is like a 20ga slug gun thats no promblem for me because thats all i used to hunt NY with about 15 yrs.i dont flinch an dont want to develope one.

I also have a 20ga Tracker II and with lightfield hybrid express all I feel is a little nudge and it clover leafs at 65 yards. The 45-70s are going to deer camp with me and the kid this fall.

Trapdoor loads won't beat you up at all. About the same as a 20ga. I'd say.

I have a 45-70. bobbed off to 18 inches of barrel.  With trapdoor loads, it isn't bad at all.  Even my reloads, on the lower end of the Marlin scale, are bearable.  I have nothing in the stock, factory recoil pad, and no other tricks pulled on it to reduce recoil.  It is about like a 30-06 or 7 mag.  You know it went off, but no bandages are needed.  It is more of a push than a sharp whack, too.  Powder selection helps with that.  The factory loads, Federal to be specific, are a little worse.

+1 on the powder selection. Shotgun powders are fast, even though the payload is heavy (and they are almost all in low pressure frames, curious?). That recoil impulse can be nasty. Nobody I know is using a shotgun load charge of fast powder in a 45-70 with a comparable weight bullet for 'high velocity loads'.
The 45-70 has been around for so long that about every combination has been reloaded for it so you dont have to reinvent the wheel. You can find every level of performance you may want in existing data and still be safe. Start with the low to middle of the loads and work your way up, you will probably find your tolerence for recoil before your get to top loads.

I should add that I have used the 'fast' shotgun powders for years in REDUCED loads for cast bullets in a lot of calibers, I just dont use them for HV loads. The small charges can 'disappear' in a big case so you must be extra careful NOT TO DOUBLE CHARGE.
There are any number of better powders for HV loads and you can find something that will give you the performance from your length barrel.

Tim, thanks for the link to the slow bullet website.  I have been wondering what to do with the 4 pounds of 700X that I inherited.  The answer is 2,800 slow rounds of 45-70.
