45 Colt and 22 Hornet
« on: May 09, 2010, 04:10:03 PM »
Sometimes we are our own worse enemy, my 45 colt has to be sighted in every time I go to the range. Today it was so far off I missed the target completey. After examining things, I see the buckhorn sight has slid to the bottom of the adjustment. I looked in the gun case and you could see where the foam was torn a little by the sight. Lesson learned, instead of changing gun cases I am going to put a WGRS sight on it, never did like the buckhorn sights.
The 22 Hornet is a different story, I have been working off and on with this for almost a year and can not get it to settle in. Today I went over it with a fine tooth comb and found the barrrel a little loose when closed. Took the forearm off and shot it. You could put VERY light side pressure on the barrrel and DRAMATCALLY change the POI. I then got my 223 out and compared the two, yep that Hornet barrel is loose! I will call tomorrow to start the return process for repairs. Of course while it is there, it would be unpatriotic not to get another barrel fitted to it. Now what do I get, a 30-30, 45-70, nothing for deer hunting, shotgun only area. JamesIII

Hope you have better luck than I did with the WGRS peep. Even bottomed out it shot a foot high at 6o yards

S.E.ak;
   If you have trouble with the WGRS, even at the bottom, why not take some of that round, bright orange weed whacker string and apply it atop the front sight with a good epoxy. It will raise your front sight and give you an excellent (same effect as lowering the rear) and an  easy to place sight picture. The usual long blade that H&R has, lends itself well to gluing a strip of the orange string along the top edge..
      It worked for me !

May try that. The sight is already very tall.If it worked I could use the red bead for a hundred and the brass bead under it for two hundred

Just a question - was the 22 Hornet barrel fitted at the factory - Does the serial number on the barrel match the last three numbers on the frame? If it does not, I do not think they will replace or refit the barrel. Good Luck and Good Shooting

S.E.AK, did you installed the taller front sight that the WGRS needs? I am sure you can find the right height by doing a search on here, I know it has been discussed before.

LaOtto222, I purchased the complete rifle, new just last year.

Either the 30-30 or the 45-70 you will probably end up waiting on due to demand,but either one is a good choice. Get both! Since your in a shotgun only area and it sounds like you like open sights get a tracker II 20ga barrel. Mine clover leafs Lightfield hybrid express at 65 yards.

Spikehorn, I already have a TrackerII and USH in 20 ga. I have been wanting a TDC barrel, what effect does the smaller rifle firing pin have on shotgun primers? If it is going to be a rifle barrel I still am torn between the 45-70 and the 30-30. Since it will just punch paper unless the state changes the rules for deer hunting, I am leaning towards the 45-70. There are just so many choices!!!!!!!  JamesIII

I've got a 22" 20ga barrel on an SB2 frame for a smooth bore slugger and have had no problems with the firing pin being smaller. it goes bang every time i've pulled the trigger. 30-30 is gunna be cheaper to punch paper with, and if you do get the opportunity to deer hunt with it, it's a good deer round.

JamesIII, if your .45 Colt is one of the new 'classic carbines' with dovetailed front sight, I recommend the Lyman #20 front globe sight. After installing the Williams receiver sight I could tell my front needed to be in the .700" height range, just too much for the stock sight, and the smaller  Lyman 17 series didn't have the right heights, too tall or too short.
The # 20 was just right at .700" with the receiver sight and there's a happy coincidence, the ring from the rear sight matches perfectly with the ring on the front sight, so you only see one ring when they're aligned. Gives an excellent, wide open sight picture with a plain post insert.

Hammerhead, thanks for the info on the front sight. I will look into that this weekend.
I have decided to order a 12 ga. TDC barrel while the hornet is in for repairs, unless I add some more before it gets done!!!!  JamesIII
