Stingers on coyotes

I've got my 22-250 as a dedicated coyote gun but I do alot of woods roaming with my 22 single shot NEF. I picked up some 32gr. CCI Stinger hollowpoints for small game. If I should happen to cross paths with a coyote while carrying the 22 would the Stingers do the trick? I'm thinking it would be OK for close shots out to 50 yds or so. What do you guys think?

I cant agree with that.  A 22LR is an iffy caliber at best on yotes. Especially the bigger eastern and northern ones. Keep the shots well under 50yds and put them right in the brain bucket.  I just recently put a 40gr HP 22 Mag in a yotes noggin at 35yds and while he was no doubt down, he still held on to life for about a minute.

I know alot of guys that use a 22LR on trap lines but thats different. Those shots are made at about 3ft and right into the noggin.

Will the stingers do the trick?If you mean will they kill 'em....yes and so will any other 22lr bullet.If you mean will you be able to find and collect the hide of said coyote...the answer is yes...sometimes...maybe.

The coyotes we have around here ( Southern Ontario ) are much to large to rely on the .22 past about 25 yards unless you can get a good angle head shot on them and even then 50 yards would be about the limit.

The .22 rimfire is marginal at best on coyotes.  I have never used Stingers, but I have shot a lot of big jack rabbits with the .22 LR.  You are talking about a chance encounter, and up close you might get a quick kill.  I hate to admit but I hit and did not recover a couple coyotes I shot when I was a teenager with a 22 rifle.  I was learning then and the lesson I learn was not to shoot.

I shot this cat out bunny hunting.  The first shot to the forehead seem to make it mad and it required two more before it was dead.  The first two failed to penetrate the scull and ran between the skull and the bone.  The third shot entered the skull killing the cat.  It was a good day to be carrying a Stevens’s autoloader.


Injured coyotes have been known to bite.

Shoot it in the neck or right under the ear and DRT! I don't collect pelts to sale so I will shoot one behind the shoulder with a stinger, but that is just me and coyotes are pests that fool with our cattle so I don't worry to much about tracking them just that they die somewhere. (coyotes are the only thing that I would say that about)

I understand your delima Daman, as I have some cattle farmers that want me out in there fields.  But i think that every hunter should consider ending the life on their game as quick as possible. I also undedrstand that no one in their right mind is going to put a $1000 bolt and scope in their truck or tractor to bouncing around until the passing song dog shows themselves.

I'd use sme High velocity hollow points and one through the head or chest and you will have a dead coyote. The reason most folks use a larger caliber is because we take alot of running and long range shots on coyote. If they we within 50 yards I would have no issue what so ever shooting a yote with a 22 LR.

Well if you are going to use a .22lr on a coyote. The stinger or velocitor would be the only two I would consider as adaquate that I have personally fired from a .22. Most of my .22 shooting is done with standard and subsonic rounds, neither of which i consider a great coyote rounds unless shots are very, very close and as a last resort, I would never perpously go out coyote hunting with a .22lr but can't say i wouldn't take a shot on one if the conditions were perfect and thats all i had with me.

Beleive me i am all about dead coyotes too, I just like to see them dead as fast as possible after being shot. As undersirable as coyotes are in cattle farming or suburban areas I still don't want them to suffer neadlessly. I respect them as being one of the most intelligent, hardest to hunt north american game animals and no matter what coyotes do, they will never accomplish the destruction to this planet or other animals like us humans have. So as much as i love to hunt them, lets try and kill them DRT when possible.

Spanky:  A good still shot between the eyes, and he's DRT.   But I've emptied a 13 round tube magazine pump .22 into two coyotes that were trying to get my dog.   :o  She was between my legs.  I found one of the Yotes about 150 yards from the skirmish.  It had 8 holes in it.  :P  :-\

There's no such thing as "too much rifle" or "overkill"....dead is dead. Rimfire isn't for coyotes. ::)

I've shot my share of coyotes with a .223 and have yet to see one drop in its' tracks. However, they've all been on the run and shot placement wasn't optimal. The .223 is on the rack and I've recently started carrying a .25-06 and can't wait to put a shot on one with it. 8)

Coyotes are tough customers!

The single shot would be more of a concern for me. With a .22 you'd be better served with a repeater of some type that would allow for a fast follow-up shot. I don't think the Stingers are necessary for head shots.
