New Englander rear sight or scope decision
« on: May 06, 2010, 07:13:48 AM »
Need some advice on a rear sight option for a new englander i recently purchased.

The entire gun is 95+% and great shape. It came with one of the newer factory T/C scope mounts that is slightly off center and hangs over to the left. (obviously for the hammer clearance) It is the newer mount with the weaver/picatinny lines cut into it.

It is very long and seems to use both rear sight holes for the front portion and a small rear screw near the tang for the back portion to mount it.

I was either thinking of removing it totally, and buying a conventional rear sight, or, using a rear BUIS or weaver backup peep sight.
I sort of dont want to take off the scope mount because it seems very stable, give me more options and its just plain "neat".

Has anyone used a backup peep or weaver style sight on this type of off center mount? The mount is off center enough that I wonder if I install it, it wouldn't even shoot straight and I might have to "drift over" the front sight to the left to compensate.

I hope my ramblings make sense

Thanks in advance

I have one of those mounts on my fast twist Hawken.  They are nice.  A rail mounted sight would have to be adjusted very far to the right.

Take it all off and install an open rear sight, or get a barrel length brass tube scope and mounts for it.   Modern scopes just don't belong on a traditional sidelock IMO.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

Put a $39 Simmons 4X ProDiamond on that sucker and you'll be a very happy camper.

Yeah, it's a sin to scope a sidelock.  But DANG, they sure are nice.

What Semisane said.  They shoot like one of those things we aren't supposed to talk about.

No other sighting system can compare with a scope, especially on a hunting rifle. On bullseye targets one can shoot a score with aperture sights as well as a scope but in the woods a scope makes the critter stand out from the background and spots the holes through the brush. I agree that scopes don't belong on a flintlock longrifle but on a T/C, why not?
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.
