Bought a Renegade (Picture added)
« on: April 30, 2010, 03:51:06 PM »
For $63.00 out the door today. The stock isn't too bad but the metal has quite a bit of active rust. I'm not sure the barrel can be saved.

Here she is after inital clean up.

Well you did well.  The stock is worth more than what you paid for the gun.  If the barrel cleans up and turns out to be a decent shooter you'll be way ahead of the game.

BUT!!!

Scrub that barrel out with lots of penetrating oil and steel wool, then further smooth it by firing a dozen or so light loads with patched round balls, with the patches coated in fine valve grinding abrasive paste.  When you can run a patch down the bore without it catching, it should be smooth enough.  Its accuracy may surprise you.  I'd bet its 1-48 twist, so try both round ball and conical loads for accuracy.  I'd probably bead blast the exterior metal, and apply one of those spray on, bake in your oven finishes, along with a stock re-finish with oil for a nice, inexpensive hunting rig.

The Green Mountain barrels seem to be gone.  Nobody has them anymore.  The metal has cleaned up pretty good so far.

Looks darn good.  If it doesn't shoot well give Pecatonica River a call (http://www.longrifles-pr.com/gminterbarrels.shtml).  They may still have some .54 caliber 1:70" twist Green Mountain barrels in stock.  Get one of those and you'll be in hog heaven.

T/C returned my Renegade lock one week after I mailed it to them with a new sear & tumbler installed at no charge.  It works fine now.

Good deal on you Swampman, nice looking TC gun and what a great price. I recently picked up the TC .56 SB too, which I believe is a Renegade as well?
Must be because a fellow sold me a .54 Renegade barrel for it for cheap but it has seen better days too.
Congrats & Cheers,
