I just had to add a shim to the barrel top shelf
« on: April 27, 2010, 08:44:12 AM »
I did find on trying to fit the 243 cal. barrel to a 2004 SB2 it needed a  a shim on the top of the barrel shelf.004  there:  I thought of a wrap it around the bottom of the shelf a bit, just so there would be a leading edge for the latch to slid on, instead of rubbing across the glued edge itself, but did find this may not work.I did use Devcon expoy and just cut the shim to the top only.I tried using a clamp but the angle did not help trying to clamp it so what I did was to first tape in place and let it set for 2 hours and then lock the barrel into the action.I did check it to day after 12 hours seem o.k. I am going to take some 400 wet and dry paper and take a tad of the edge of the shim should help in the lock up.
I now have a nice .001 lock up between the barrel and action I will report back on how she shoots this weekend

Would be nice to hear how this holds up with use.  I have a vested interest in this as I seem to always remove to much metal and I am sure one day I will work my "magic" on the latch shelf.

difference between Tim and I, he reads and remembers the FAQs, I read the FAQs and find out what I need to know about 30 minutes too late to save myself from trouble.

I dunno if that's exactly accurate, I've read the FAQs and put stuff in there, but I don't always remember what's in there, and I'm getting more forgetful all the time!!  :-[ ::) ;D On this particular topic, lonewolf PMd me and I vaguely remembered someone actually doing a shelf shim, so I had to look in the FAQs to see if I had put it in there, I finally found it after doing a page search on the fitting page.  :D

I just reloaded a few rounds for the 243 cal. barrel I resized trimmed the case and drop the powder charge:I was lucky to test a few rounds after I did seat the bullet to how the barrel action locked up.
I did find remington brass no problem but winchester brass gave me some trouble on lock up,I seen it before on different brands of brass with the 243 cal. and single shot lock up.
The Remington brass is thinner at the base of the belt lip enough to sit a tad flush to the chamber  end in the barrel.
I also tried to sit the resizing die  deeper but still pushing the shoulder made no difference

I did range test the 243 cal. today man the barrel will shoot excellent.I just made up about 25 rounds with IMR 4350 40.1 grains and  85 sp bullet 3 shots 1/2" group but the shim did not last after the 25 shot .I am going to try the goop super weld epoxy.
The gun did well for the first run I wish the trigger was a tad lighter it breaks clean but at 65 oz. not the best I would like it at 2 1/2 lbs to 3 lbs.

lonewolf,

please continue your posts on fixing your 243 latch shelf.  I have one barrel that is almost out of travel on the release lever so I am probably going to have to do something about it.  I read in the FAQs that "peening" the latch shelf is an option.  I didn't see where "peen" was defined but from my Navy days to peen meant to beat on something with a hammer.  Using Goop or JB weld sounds a little more civilized than whopping on a gun barrel with a ball peen. :P

Good luck with your gunsmithing efforts and your shooting!

Use silver solder to attach the shim to the shelf.

I was out today used the J@B on the shim seem it works after 25 rounds it is still there
I loaded up some 100 grain Hornady SPBT with IMR 4350 40.6 grains shot good but not great groups.
I find the Handi has a long long chamber the bullet closed on 2.800
I was out last week loaded up some 87 Sp Hornady with 4350 shot one hole group
I yet to find a barrel that will shoot 100 grainers the same as the 85 to 90 SP bullets

I have not had any trouble with my 308 barrel.
That said it is my backup deer rifle so It sees one group a year to make sure it's still on.
