Can someone tell me when this 94 Winchester was made?

One of my friends bought a winchester 94 the other day and he asked me to find out when it was made if i could.  He only gave me the first 3 digits of the serial number. They are 406, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks..

If that's the complete serial it was made in 1894.

How many digits are in the SN, total ?

Three (406) = 1894, four (406x) = 1894, five (406xx) = 1895, six (406xxx) = 1907, seven (406xxxx) = 1974 ?

It makes a BIG difference.

Yes it does. I already guessed probably 3 Xs behind the numbers which should put it around 1984 unless it's one of the real old ones. I have been wrong before.

AFAIK, Winchester Model 94 SN 5103248 was the last one at the end of the year, 1982.

It is 406####, so does that make it from 1974, or sometime after?

According to my books, one of which is (WINCHESTER DATES OF MANUFACTURE 1894-1984 by GEORGE MADIS) serial # 406XXXX was made in 1974.
Starting serial # that year was 3929365 and ended with 4111426 with a total production that year of 182062 guns.
