25-06 feed back

I'm a big fan of the  25-06 & 257wby and plan adding to my 1/4 bore collection.  Can you guys that have the handi give me some feed back on your 25-06s.  Still breaking into the handi club and have not yet seen a post on this cal.   Since this group is so big I got to ask has any bumped their 25-06 to the 257wby or is it not possible.  With the 26" barrel this would make one heck of a handi

H&R Doesn't off any magnum rifle chamberings for good reason, the SB2 frame isn't made to handle the breech thrust of that big of case head and pressure. They considered it two years ago, and had 7mm, 300 and 338 mags on the drawing board with new Handi-mag frames, but they  were canceled due to insufficient distributor pre-orders.

The 25-06 is typically a good shooter, mine is with three different factory loads, out of the box, first two shots touching, the third opening the group up to ~1", this is the last group I shot with it when I sighted it in last year for deer season with 120gr Rem Core-Lokts, scope adjustments after shots 1 and 2 at 131yds.

yeah me too, when I first got my 25-06 I was disappointed until, I came onto this site a got lots a excellent advice for accuracy, now shooting from a rest it will cloverleaf first three after that it opens up, but really if you miss after three shoots you don't deserve meat on the table. I use H4831sc 117sst works for me

I'm just trying to take this one step further and I hope it does not sound stupid.  The case head for my 45 lc has to match the 460SW and you guys are getting 2800+fps out of this combo with a 200 gr bullet. WOW is my first reaction and then I know my 300 win mag would be hard pressed to match that at the muzzle with a 200gr. At a fast  glance from some reload data the 454 chamber pressure looks close to the 257 and were listed in cup.  The head of the 257 is ever so slightly larger in diameter.  There must be some pressure dynamics that I dont understand.  Maybe the surface size of the base of the bullet.  The smaller the surface the more thrust on the breech??? 

Can't always have your cake and eat it to, but the recipe sure sounded tasty for a moment.

The 257Wby has a .514" case head and operates at 63kpsi and is a bottlenecked case which is a whole different ball game when it comes to breech thrust since pressure in a straight walled case pushes just as much on the chamber walls as it does on the breech, bottlenecked cases have the chamber shoulder to push against which increases the force on the standing breech. If this weren't true, the 500S&W wouldn't be a factory offering, it has a SAAMI MAP of 60kpsi and a .526" case head. The 460S&W has a case head just .008" larger than a 270 Win, so there's not enough difference there to be concerned about, they both have a SAAMI MAP of 65kpsi.

I got it now,  in a way to simple approach I thought pressure was equal on all surfaces and all directions.  I'm about ready to get my 2nd handi and like I said the 25 cal is one I like.  Have a 25-06 in handi makes since to me beacuse I'm set up for one already.  A 308 or 7-08 also is on my mind.  My next thought is after the three shot issue what brings back your groups,  cooling or cleaning ?  Thanks again for all the help.

Let it cool, but working with the forend will cure it too, see the accurizing section of the FAQs. These are hunting rifles, if the first shot is on it's target it doesn't matter where any rounds go after that unless you're colony shooting varmints.
