There's a Savage 99 in 303 savage caliber with the full mannlicher forend listed in the local trading paper. I called and the guy is looking to trade it. The serial number is 258xxx, but neither he or I know how much it is worth. Anybody have any insight for me? Was this a factory option or is the mannlicher forend an add-on?

If it's only a shooter $350-600.00 based on condition.

I've never heard of a factory rifle with a Mannlicher style stock... and there's no mention of a Mannlicher stocked Model 99 in his book,"The Ninety-Nine" by Savage Model 99 expert Doug Murray.

Therefore, I believe that "Mannlicher stock" is an after-market add-on.  Its value is questionable, depending on the rifle's overall condition and what someone is willing to pay for it.

Some "customized" rifles are well worth their cost... others aren't.  Like so many things, the "value" of something is in the eyes... and within the capability of the beholder's bank account.   :)

SN 258xxx denotes 1924 manufacture.

Since the .303 Savage is a .30-30-class cartridge, I'd want to be certain of ammo availability/cost, and pay no more than $350 for one with an aftermarket/modified stock.

Savage 99's have only been made with half-stock type forends of various configs, depending on model & year, like schnobble tip, round tip, contrasting tip, etc.

+1 on the ammo. I also have a 303 Savage & ammo is difficult to find & QUITE expensive. Luckily I bought several boxes before it was discontinued, and now am preparing to reload for it. I can't quite match the factory bullets, but at least I can keep it shooting.
