Refinishing a Handi
« on: April 14, 2010, 04:18:14 PM »
What do y'all reccomend for a durable refinish on the action and barrel?  Dura-coat, Aluma-hyde, Ceracaot or spray paint?

Aluma Hyde is good. I like this even better....

Access to a bead blaster is a plus with either.

I like blued steel. :D A browned finish is nice too.
It's been durable enough for me for 35yrs. Longer than that if ya count Pop's double barrel.

Spray paint is cheapest with lots of options. You will have problems with the thickness of the paint on the area where the barrel and frame meet.
If you like the bluing and are just wanting to prevent rust, good old black Kiwi boot polish will keep it looking great. My BC gets a new coat every Fall in preperation for hunting season.

If you are willing to go through the trouble of doing a good oven cure job, you might as well do a rust blue. The premixed solution sold today is unbelievably consistent (beats the hell out of dissolving nails in acid,) the prep work is a little more tedious, lots of hand work to do a quality job, but nothing looks more appropriate on a gun like a Handi.

Spray paint will certainly work, and can look good if you put the effort into it. I use clear kiwi on all surfaces if I'm going out in the wet, very few things work as good as a first line of protection. Never thought of using black kiwi, as long as it dries good and hard before you handle it, it probably would work great.

Ive seen a couple of rifles guys have redone, and one fella had one that was a plum color, and man did that look sharp.
Brown looks great too!

I've been wondering about this.
After hearing about how deleicate the finish is.
I like the ideas shared here.
The shoe polish thing sounds interesting.

Whatever color Rustoleum you like, just prep/degrease the metal good and use the recommended primer coat. While you live with it you can think about how you can shoot more with the money/time you saved, or dream about the next finish you will do to it 'someday'.
