Fibre Optic Sight Use?
« on: November 18, 2003, 04:50:04 AM »
As an aging hunter that prefers using iron sights, I have seen significant improvement in my low-light vision and speed getting on target since adding a Fibre-Optic front bead to my favorite lever-guns. My preference is the green bead, and with a perforated sight hood this combination has put me back to where my hunting sight was twenty years ago!

I'm wondering if others have considered and used this innovation?

I just aquired my first lever action, and I too suffer from aging eyes. I was thinking about a red dot or similar with a big tube. Can't really focus rear to front to target. So what type rear sight are you using with this rig?

Brushbuster,
I too have suffered with aging eyes.  In particular, I had fiberoptics on my Traditions muzzleloader and had to ditch the rear sight because I couldn't focus on both sights together.  I replaced it with a peep sight from Williams I believe and it screwed into the same mounting holes as the original.  As you know, you don't focus with a peep sight and it just disappears in the sightplane.

I am shooting fiber optics on almost all of my open sighted guns.  I have been using the Williams brand.  I put a set on my Win. Trapper and my groups improved right away.

Jim n Iowa;

I have installed a green Fibre-Optic front bead on my M-71 Winchester which has a tang rear aperture sight (Lyman #2 for 1886). The improvement was so significant, that I immediately did the same on my Marlin 336-.35 Rem. which is equipped with a Lyman #57 rear aperture sight.

With an aperture type sight, the bright fibre-optic bead allows the shooter to really forget about anything else except the target and the front bead. I have used scopes a lot over the years as well, but for shooting under 150 yards, the aperture-fibre-optic combination is IMO unbeatable; trouble free, fog free and tough. The poor light in morning and evening are actually the best times for this type of sight; with the green tubes providing a little more light than the red.

The brand that I chose (HI VIZ) provides 6 fibre-optic sight tubes of varying size that can be easily replaced on the metal dovetail base. It's an easy changeover, and you can go back to your original front sight if you want, but I bet you never will!  And just ask the moose and deer in my freezer if they work.

My old Marlin 336 in .35 Rem. wears a Williams Firesight front sight and a Williams receiver peep sight. Mine is a red or reddish orange front. A lime green might be better but I bought the combo off my Classifieds Forum at a good price and am using what it had in the set. My eyes are already aged.

You should try the small red dot from Docter . I am myself in my early fifties and find it perfect, quick on target, both eyes open.[/code]

I hate to be the naysayer on this one, but I had a red Fire Sight, hunted it for two years and took it off.  I can see white nail polish better in dim light.  Maybe green is the answer.  Another thing I didn't care for was the rounded front bead.  I can shoot the square front sight better

I'll agree with Castaway on this, at least as far as prefering a square post.  I have always used the "Sourdough Patridge" type front sight, but the last couple of years the gold has become a bright blob out there on the end of the barrel.  I haven't tried fiber optic sights thinking they would exacerbate the problem.  Just this morning I put White-Out on the sight and it made a big difference.  White fingernail polish might be more permanent.  Hmm...

I have always used a peep rear, the "poor man's scope."  Last year I was prone, taking a bead on a nice buck but I couldn't see anything through the sights.  There was a leaf in the rear aperture!  (The deer was kind enough to stay put while I blew the leaf out of the sight, foolish critter!)

I recently was doing some bear hunting in a shotgun only area and borrowed my brother in laws 12ga that had a green Fire sight on it.  I was absolutely amazed at how much light it gathered.  I could still see where I was aiming when it was too dark to see a target.  Needless to say I am ordering same for my hunting rifle.

I ordered the HIVIZ as it comes in green for my 1894p. I have ordered the Williams receiver sights also. If your Marlin in newer than two years you may not have any side mount plugs and have to mount on top using the rear scope mounts.

I've owned this 1894 for about 6 or so years.  It has the screws in the side of the receiver (left side), so I figure that is where the sight mounts? No to change to a fiber optic front sight, what do you have to do?

The buckhorn sights are tapped out left to right( as you hold the rifle to shoot) I assume the front sights are the same.
