Choose one Kimber or Remington
« on: April 12, 2010, 05:28:07 PM »
Here is my choice.

A Stainless 30-06 Sprg. Model 700™ CDL™ SF Limited Edition or a Blued Kimber 308 Winchester 84 M Classic Select.

Rifle use, deer, pronghorn, maybe a black bear or moose, but I have larger rifle calibers as well. I own both, and both are new never fired yet or in the field.

I am going to sell one, but which one I don't know as of yet...

Need some advice or guidance here....

That is a very tough choice there and really don't know what to tell you. I am a big Remington 700 fan and that CDL sure is a pretty one but on the other hand I always wanted to own one of those beautiful Kimbers as well and the 308 is one of my favorite rounds. As much as I love the Remington I think I would keep the Kimber. Dale

I'd lose the Remington in a New York Minute, since I've little/no use for a stainless rifle - AND - The Kimber Classic Select is one BEAUTIFUL shootin' iron !

I have been thinking the same thing, the Kimber is a fine rifle. Not to much difference between the 308 and the 30-06, other than larger bullet weights and a little faster. If I need to step up in bullet weight for larger game, I will just go with a larger caliber I.e. 338 Win Mag or something like that..

My buddy and I both agree that I should keep the Kimber as well.

Shoot them both and keep the one that shoots better.  I know of two Kimbers I have shot in the last three years that looked more like buckshot patterns at 100 yards. Otherwise I would have said kimber for sure.  I just love the feel of them.

OK Kimber is staying, I just ordered mounts and rings, now I need Dies and brass... Here we go again....lol

I wanted to shoot both, but for some reason a gun that is new still in the box, brings a little more than a used gun...  I will just have to take my chances. I have heard a lot of good abou the Kimber rifles..

Never sell a good rifle.  You will someday regret it.  Can't have too many.

Sure you can have too many...I have over 50 rifles and handguns, more than I will ever shoot or need to shoot.  I don't get attached to my guns..

I picked up the Remington on a trade, and won the Kimber at the NRA dinner the other night... So neither were something I was really looking for, so even if I sold both I would be OK.. But I just want to keep one, and think the Kimber gets not nod..  ;D

Glad you decided to hang onto the Kimber. I would have been questioning your sanity, otherwise  ;D

Agreed - But it came with age for me..................... When I retired, I trimmed my accumulation (I refuse to call it a collection) from over 300 down to the present 40 or so - but in reality, there's only one or two of each genre (RF/CF/Shot/BP/CCW/etc) that I actually keep going back to/using.

Sooooooo, I think I'l be doing a little more trimming.

BTW - In regards to "inaccurate Kimbers":  I've easily rectified two such specimens for friends, over the years, via using standard accurizing methods - none of which involved drastic steps like rebarreling or new stocks/triggers.

the only kimber i have any experience was chambered in 338 federal and it was my buddies. he had a heck of a time putting a combination together that would shoot good. maybe to do more with the catridge then the rifle though? it really brings to mind an overpriced winchester though.

Well ordered mounts and rings for the Kimber, they will be here tomorrow, I have a Leupold VaraX III 3.5 X 10 X 50 to mount on it. Got dies ordered and brass coming. Now to choose a bullet, I went in my reloading room I found 2 boxes of Nosler ballistic tip 150 gr, 2 boxes og Barnes 168 gr.XLT, a bot of 180 gr. Hornady SPBT.  I think I am also going to try some Nosler Accubonds in the 165 gr. range in this gun and see what it will do..

As for the Remington, I sold it to my buddy for a great price with ammo, brass and dies. he is going to use it for our black hear hunt coming up in August. I may take my Kimber with some 180 gr. bullets. But nothing like a Marlin 45-70 in the woods for black bear..

I have several Kimbers and have NEVER had ANY issues with them. Bought a new Remington this year and when I took the stock off to clean the packing grease  out of it (Straight from the box!!) the trigger assembly fell out in small parts scattered on the floor. FINALLY got it put back together and took it back to the store I bought it for. After a lengthy discussion, the dealer agreed to take it back. No more Remington's for this boy.
Perception is everything. For instance, a crowded elevator smells different to a midget.

If it was me, I would sell both and buy a Ruger Hawkeye in a .30-06 and if need be have a little trigger work done.
IME Rugers, out of the box are more accurate than Remingtons and more consitent than Kimbers.
In the last 5 years I have bought a M77, #1=A, #1-B and a Hawkeye and all shot 1.0 to 1.25 inches at a 100 yards out of the box. I had a little trigger work all of them and they all got to a MOA or better; and with handloads they were even better.
I like Rugers so much I just ordered another one.

The Ruger was not the option here.  If I were to sell them both, I would get a Sako in either 308 or 30-06. I have shot several Ruger's, and I found them no more accurate that a Remington or Kimber. It is all really personal preference when you get to this point.
