So I bought this ancient broken down Crosman 760
« on: April 08, 2010, 06:29:49 PM »
For no other reason than it was heavy (metal receiver and brass bolt). Has heavy plastic stocks. S/N makes it pre 75. Needs a pivot pin and retainer as there is nothing now. Might need seals. Afraid to stress parts by putting more than a couple pumps.

Does anyone ever send guns back to Crosman for a refurb?

These are really simple guns to repair, I just restored one a few weeks back.
Made a couple of little mods also. air leaves the resavoir(sp) a little quicker now.

My 2 or 3 year old Benjamin 397 quit holding a charge (or whatever you call it).

Thought that since I work for a company that makes compressors, maybe I can fix it solely by association. Took it apart. The light bulb for me was that these things compress unfiltered air. Over time the miniscule little floaties in the atmosphere accumulate in there and clog up the seal on the check valve. Wiped it all off real good. greased the contact surfaces of the check valve.

Its back to Cadillacin'. Went varmint hunting off the back deck. Bagged a nice boar chipmunk, probably a 150 class on the Chip-n-Dale scale.

Air Gun Grease: whatever was on the table. this time it was Hoppes gun grease, but Vaseline would have worked. Maybe not a white bearing grease though.

PowWow.   Just in time.  Mine just started acting up and won't hold air.  I got into it a little ways but am not sure where the check valve is.  Took the trigger housing off and pulled out what looked like a hammer and spring.  Didn't want to take the nut that holds the stock screw out for fear of it flying apart.  Maybe you could give us a take down by the numbers.

blow up of parts at this link:
http://www.crosman.com/pdf/manuals/B397-EVP%20&%20PL1.pdf

make sure all pressure is relieved. no fly-across-the-room type surprises.
remove the stock screw.
remove the metal from the wood.
make sure part #10047 is threaded in and not brazed. if its brazed, it get s trickier, mine was threaded.
remove it and the screws at the back end of the barrel.
a couple of logical trigger parts come out.
then a brass rocket looking thing.
the brass rocket is where the compressed air is stored.
unscrew one end from the other. the check valve and a spring is in there and thats where the atmospheric floaties accumulate.
de-gunk it. vaseline it. put it back together.

i put a pipe clamp on each end of the brass rocket to unscrew it.
then i realized that a few light plier marks on the brass rocket does not affect performance.

Later I ordered this re-build kit from www.AirGunWarehouseInc.com for about $23.00

Benjamin & Sheridan    part # PY-A-911
Repair Kit, Fits Some
Post-1995 Multi-Pumps
w/Cartridge Valve

it has all the non-metal parts, including the little o-ring on the bolt and the plunger on the pump.

Great info PowPow.  We must have the same series.  I got mine a couple years ago also.  Think I might go for that PY A 911 Kit.  It's going for 12.95 now, so you might think about stocking up.
Thanks for the reply.     Div Arty

PowPow   Took it apart and wow what a mess.  Didn't realize how much gunk and corrosion could build up, just after two years.  Maybe after 4000 pellets it does need a little cleaning.   Sent for the kit and you were right, after shipping it is almost $23.00.  Should get back to shooting in about a week.

Two years should not have trashed the plastic parts.
Clean it, put it back together and see if it compresses.
Mine did.
