Triger Guard Hinge Pin ( Pivot Pin)
« on: April 07, 2010, 03:00:33 PM »
Noticed my triger guard hinge pin was broken. There was a piece about a half inch long, .470, holding things together. Maybe too many 444 Marlin rounds for 20 years. Any way, the shank of a 7/64 dtill bit measures the same diameter, .1083, as the hinge pin. Would this be a sutiable replacement. It's not from a cheap set of drills, I'm a machinest and got it from work. Not sure if high speed steel is strong enough or may be to brittle. The drill shank is a good fit, had to lightly tap it in with a small block of wood.

I'm no machinest but IIRR aren't drill bit shanks softer than the fluted area?
It should work OK, it's not like it's the barrel hinge pin.

Maybe on larger taper shank drills but with small diameter jober drill the hardness is uniform.
Cut the flutes off one and ground it to the proper length and put it in the gun. Haven't shot it yet.
Called TC a few minutes ago, got a recording. The hours or operation are 8 - 4 Monday - Friday.
I'm in Texas, leave for work at 5:45 AM before they open and get home about 5:45 PM after they
close. So, first chance I get to call them during normal hours I will.

I emailed them about a part I needed and it arrived about 10 days later. They never did respond to the email so I wasn't expecting it.

It is odd that pin would break. That pin is not stressed much, just when opening the action, unless you use a mallet because the barrel dont fit.

I like the drill shank for the personal touch.

AS luck would have it I only had to work till noon on Friday so I called TC when I got home and they are sending the pivot pin and clip. The drill shank is in place till I get the real one. Might leave it in and shoot it some to see how it holds up.
