Anybody use ammo for their 357 max from Reeds ammo? What loads were best and overall impression?

I've got a box on order with Reeds right now.  Their website said it was in stock, but it's been two weeks and I haven't seen it.  I had an order last fall for .357 max with them that I eventually cancelled around the end of December.

I have bought 180 gr. Maxis several times out of ammobank.com, made by Precision Cartridge, but they're out of stock as of now.  I'll be rolling my own in a few days when the rest of my reloading gear gets here.

I got two boxes of Reeds 180 gr. Hornady XTPs and they are superb.  Great folks to deal with.  Like everyone else, they sometimes have problems coming up with brass, but it is not their fault.

Sorry Vic, I haven't Chronyed them.  My handloads, if I recall correctly are running at about 2200.  I can drag out the chrony and pm ya later about both.

Whoops....I think they're running a lot slower than that and I'm mixing apples and oranges.  I'll be back with the straight poop.

I will do that, but I can't today.....full holiday schedule.  Quite a few fellow members here shared their favorites with me and I'll pass them on to you.

Vic,
Are you set up to load maxi's now? If so, good show!! It opens you up to a ton more options!!

I discovered the virtues of AA1680 powder many moons ago and it remains a top load for most people. My load is just below max as I saw to appreciable gain with more powder. H110, 296, Lil gun all have a good following as well. IMR and H4227 are not to be forgotten either.

As for bullets, you will be hard pressed to find a better one thanthe Hornady 180 SSP. The XTP and Speer 180's are also very good. I never recommend a bullet heavier than 180's as the maxis limited powder cap limits velocity with slower powders needed to get good game performance. BUT, I haven't shot game yet but the new Hornady FTX 200 is very accurate. If it holds to be a more fragile bullet as other in the line are. It should be a good game bullet at maxi attainable velocities.

As for primers small rifle and small rifle match is all imuse. Forget about the pistol primers here. You can experiment with SR mag primers if you like, but I haven't seen the need.

Good luck and load safe!!

Really didn't want to have to reload but it looks like if I want the Max out of the Max :) I am going to have to. After we get Christmas over I will start looking at presses. Used to load with a Lee Classic and had great results, may go that route, way cheaper! Would appreciate your pet loads also.

IMHO, if it is getting the most shooting out of your ammo dollar reloading is the only way to go.
That said, every once in a while a good deal on factory ammo (that your rifle likes) does come along, but if you dont like bein' beholden' to the company, roll your own.

BUT you came around to it didn't ya Pete!!!

It DOESN'T need to be a insurmountable thing!!  There is used equipment out there, you just need to look. Talk with or make a friend from a local gun store, I guarantee there is people going in there looking to sell used equiptment. EBay can have deals, if you know what your buying. Local papers and places like Craigslist are other avenues. For more information there are a number of good books not to mention the many experienced loaders who visit/post here daily. You could also PM members for specific questions. I for one would be happy to help.
