Well guys I just put $300.00 down on a used Remington 700 SPS Varmint 22-250. The rifle still looks new and does not even look like it has been shot. The price for it was $459.99. ;D I will be able to pick it up next Friday. Them Groundhogs better look out now. :o ;D I had the same rifle in the 243 a couple years ago and it sure was a shooter. I took a couple Groundhogs at about 500 yards with it and I expect to be able to do the same with this rifle. I am just plain tickled. I can't wait to get it and sure hope it shoots as well as my old 243. Dale

I have never owned a 22-250 before so I am looking for ammo to shoot Groundhogs with. What do you guys shoot in your 22-250's? I found this Winchester ammo that is blistering fast and shoots like a laser acording to the ballistics. http://www.winchester.com/Products/rifle-ammunition/usa/jacketed-hollow-point/Pages/USA222502.aspx  I will probably shoot 50 or 55 grain ammo from it though. I know the 58 grain Hornady 243 ammo did a number on the Groundhogs so I think 50 or 55 grain would probably be about right. Let me know what you shoot. Thanks Dale

What happened to getting a Stevens? Did you let Swampy get you with the peer pressure? :D
Just funnin' you Dale. Congrats on the purchase buddy. I can't wait to throw some lead with my 22-250. ;)
What is the twist in your barrel? Mine is 1 in 12 and I was told it will shoot best with 60 gr. or lighter bullets.
I'm gonna try some 55 gr. Rem. ammo and 45 gr. Winchester ammo.
We need some pics of your new toy when you pick it up. ;D ;D

I went to pick up the Stevens 223 today that I had on layaway and the guy at the gun counter pissed me off. I was filling out the fourm so they could do the back ground check and the address I put down did not match my license adderss. He asked why it did not match. I said I did not move that they gave us a new 911 address and that is what I wrote on the paper work. He said he could not sell me the gun until I get a new license with my new address. I said you got to be kidding me!!!!!!! I said I did not move anywhere they just gave us a new 911 address. I said look just give me a new fourm and I will fill it out with my old address and he said no he could not do that. I said fine I will buy my rifle somewhere else and I cancelled my layaway. I am happy it worked out that way though. I got the caliber I wanted and the brand I really wanted at a great price. Dale

That's a good price, I'd not let any of my SPS Varmint rifles go that cheaply.

I missed the part of your about the twist rate. The one I am getting is 1 in 14". I think I want to shoot 50 or 55 grain bullets in it for Groundhogs. Let us know how yours shoots. Dale

I have an R700 SPS Varmint .22-250 that should be identical to the one you are getting. I've not really tried a very wide variety of loads in it but every thing I have shot is very accurate.

I have two different Hornady factory loads I've used in it. I thought they were the same but after checking more closely I noticed one was moly coated and the other was not. That is the only differences and both use 50 grain V-Max bullets.

Surprisely to me the moly out shoots the uncoated bullets by quite a bit. Both stay well under an inch for five shots at 100 yards but the moly bullets are closer to a half inch. They do not shoot to quite the same POI so aren't directly interchangeable at least not on prairie dogs which is all I've shot with them so far.

Last couple of PD shoots I've made I took it with me and used it as my long range reach out and touch them rifle. I used the Model Seven Predator in .17 Fireball mostly up to about 300 yards then switched to the .22-250 when the shots were out there in the 400-500 and over range. It pops them with authority as far as I've been able to hit them with it.

I had an old box of Remington 55 grain SP ammo I picked up to try out a Savage rifle years ago. The Savage made patterns like a shotgun so I only fired a few and set the box aside. I used that ammo to sight the rifle in with and then fired the rest up as groups at 100 yards. I must say it was the most accurate load I've run thru the rifle to date with groups going well under a half inch. I was very tempted to buy it but am not sure as old as that ammo was that the more current stuff would still shoot like that. Besides Hornady shipped me ten boxes free and Remington doesn't ship me free ammo. I bought ten boxes and Hornady shipped me ten boxes and so far I'm still shooting on that but am about out so will be moving to reloads soon. I do have one load I've put together for it with Midsouth bullets that seems to be about as accurate as the Hornady factory loads certainly as accurate as the non moly load.

Only .22-250 that I own happens to be a Ruger #1 that I got back about 13 years ago.  It surprisingly shoots well, given the hit-or-miss accuracy reports that I've heard about.

I do own one SPS, it is a Tactical though and not a Varmint.  I can't say enough good things about the rifle, especially since I picked it up for $560.  I did the usual that I do with my Remmys and swapped the stock out and took the trigger down, but it is still the factory barreled action.

Just took it out today and put 8 rounds through it to sight my new scope in.  Made 2 adjustments in my first three shots and then fired a 5 shot group.  Fit all five inside the 1" circle that I was aiming at.  Zeroed my elevation and windage knobs, and put the gun up.  It has just been that dependable since I've got it.

I really think you'll like your SPS Varmint.  I'm not a fan of the stocks that come on them, but I haven't heard of too many that you can't get under MOA with a good handload.

Good luck.

;) Dale, over the ;years I have had maybe half a dozen varmit barreled Rem. .22-250's....All were excellent...I fire mostly handloads and seldom shoot much factory ammo....good loads for the .22-250 are a dime a dozen...personally, like have come to love the pastic tipped bullets either by Horn. or Serria...there may be others but those are the ones I can get here, so I use those....I  like 50 grain...they are longer that the regular 50 grain bullets according to Serria...I can drive them very fast  and accurately out of any of the 26 inch barrels..I have used thousands of 52 speer hollowpoints, 55 grain Serria hpbt, and 55 grain Horn. all were very accurate...as for heavy bullets, mine is a 1-14 twist and all shoot Serria 63 and WW 64 grain very accurately...the heaviest bullet I have used is the 70 grain Speer...but I have not shot it much in these rifles...still have aa couple hundred so I must try them..I got my best acc. with 63 grain and above with IMR 4350...I mostly use old time powders... 4064 was excellent, but hard to meter and not as fast as others..H4895 is one of my current favorites, and also IMR 3031...I just started using it, as I got 10 pounds in the old square can on sale...Great gun and a great caliber...I plan to try some of the 40 grain VMax  just to see how fast they can be driven..and how they perform...ofcourse because they are also a bit longer than the conventional soft nose, they should carry a bit better than the old style bullets time will tell.  Enjoy.....groundhogs had better be ware.......let  us know how she performs...

You were saying you wanted to try some 40 V-Max bullets to see how fast you could drive them and be accurate. Well Hornady makes a 35 grain V-max and I bet it could be loaded to close to 4,500 fps. :o ;D That is blistering fast. You should give some of them a try. ;)

It would not be to good on a barrel though. I will also get into reloading this summer if all goes well with work. I just can't wait to pick this thing up next Friday. It looks like it might have to wear my BSA Sweet 17 scope that is a 6x18x40 with side focus for a couple weeks until I can buy some decent optics to put on it. Dale

Nice price !

You will love the 22-250. I hear the Winchester white box ammo is both reasonably priced and accurate.

I went to Gander Mountain today and picked up my new Remington 700 SPS Varmint in the 22-250. When the guy brought it out from the back room it came in the Remington box. When he opened it, it even had the new Remington 4x12x40 scope in it boxed up. I asked him if it came with that scope and he said yes. It turns out this is a Dick's rifle with the green stock that someone bought new and sold it to them. It was never even fired. I am about to put the scope mounts and scope on it in a little bit. Then I will take some pictures of the new rifle. I feel I got one hell of a deal on a new in box unfired Remington 700 for only $459.99 and it even come with their cheap scope at that price. Dale

I am going to buy a couple boxes of the Winchester 45 grain JHP tomorrow morning and go to the range with the new toy. Walmart has them for $28.00 for a box of 40 so I am going to find out if they shoot in my rifle. I will give you guys a range report with this ammo tomorrow. I really like Hornady V-Max but at this price I am going to give them a try. Dale

Just a heads up but that website/stock combo have been the start of a few "disappointed" threads recently.  Personally if you are dead set on that stock I'd look into shootersdiscount.com.  They have a much better track record recently of getting the product to you on time.  Good luck.

Thanks very much for the heads up. Are you saying that web site that sells stocks has problems delivering the stocks they sell? I ask this because they also sell a stock that I want to put on my Marlin 917V. Thanks Dale

Well guys I bought a new scope on my new rifle. It is the most expensive scope I have ever bought. I bought a Vortex Viper 6.5x20x44 for it and it came this morning Fedex. I have to say it is a very nice scope for the money. Here is a link to it.

I can't wait to get it mounted and sighted in. So how do you guys like my scope choice? Dale

Sorry for the late reply Dale,

Yes, as a matter of fact, Stockys does a lot of "drop-ship" orders.  The issues that I've heard about were not being able to deliver on or even near initial estimated delivery dates, but that doesn't keep them from charging the day you place the order.  Then you are stuck waiting on something you already paid for, but have no idea when its coming.

That is why I personally either order from a supplier who does not charge until the product is ready to ship, or who has the product in stock before I buy.

I dont want to totally blast a supplier who I've never personally done business with.  I've looked at their site, and it is rather nice, its just that after reading several "nightmare" stories, I've decided that if I ever needed one of the brands that they sell, I'd go elsewhere.

I've also owned exactly one Bell and Carlson stock.  The ergonomics of the stock fit me well, but as far as QC went, I got a lemon.  The bottom of the forend was canted at a good 10 degrees off.  I sold it off at a loss, and swore off B&C forever.  I have seen many satisfied customers of their products though.  The good thing about the aluminum bedding block is that with a little skim bedding you can really make it fit like a glove.  I bedded two different H-S Precision stocks on my old 5R, and even after swapping stocks my zero changed exactly 1/4 MOA at 100yds.

Well I mounted the scope today and headed to the range. I have to say this is a very very clear scope and I like it a lot. I did not get around to shooting the box today. I pretty much just sighted it is and shot a couple groups with it today. The Mill Dots in the recticle seem to be correct. What I mean by that is at 100 yards 1 Mill Dot = 3.6". Well while looking through the scope today at the range at 100 yards the first Mill Dot was just a hair more than 3 1/2" from the center of the target with my scope set on 14 power like it should be set while using the Mill Dots. It is easy judging 3 1/2'' with these targets because they have 1" squares and I was just a little more than 3 1/2 sruares. It would seem that they have their spacing correct. When I left the range I went straight to one of the fields I hunt Groundhogs at. I got my second Groundhog of the year today with this new set up and the first Groundhog ever with this rifle.  I saw him just as soon as I got there. He was about 250 yards out. He was nice enough to hang around for me to get the gun out of the truck load it and get set up for the shot.  I did miss him the first shot. He just stood there looking around like what was that. I did nail him with the second shot though.   Here are some pictures of the new set up and a couple groups I shot today. Next time I get to the range I will shoot the box with this scope. I have to say this though if you were to buy this scope you would not be disapointed. Take care Dale
