Revolver or semi-auto & why?
« on: April 02, 2010, 05:44:15 AM »
Just courious what your preferences are. Revolver or Semi-Auto in a rimfire and why?

I have both and like both but prefer the 8-10 shot revolver to tote as a trail gun or boat gun or just because gun. I think it's nostalgia mostly, and reliabiality.

I would like to hear your choices and why?

Thanks

I have always been a revolver type of guy as far as targets and hunting. Always been a sucker for S&W too. I have a Ruger Mk 3 22lr that I like to carry when out scouting the woods or fishing. The Ruger carries very well and shoots great for what I use it for.

I have both also. I carry my Ruger single six or my H&R 9 shot more than the .22-45. They all shoot well so I guess the only reason I carry the revolver is I like the way they feel. 8)

Have both and I will grab the Semi autos most of the time.
Hard to beat a buck mark and with a spare mag in your pocket 20 rounds in the woods is going ot be more than enough.

I like the semi for the reason mentioned Mcwoodduck, additional rounds in a loaded mag. If the outing was less likely to involve shooting then I see no benefit to a semi. I just find it a pain to dig through a pocket for loose ammo. I'm a mag whore at heart and like to have plenty loaded and ready for a range trip.

Well, I don't have a hard and fast preference, I have both. One thing I can say for sure, my revolvers have NEVER failed to fire. Even my Ruger MkII will occationally FTF with junk ammo, or cheap high speed hollow points. My Ruger semi-autos are for sittin' and shootin' and my revolvers are "suff 'em in my pocket or pack and take 'em with me" guns.

For casual woods carry, either will do.  I often carry a Bearcat, a Walther P22, or a 4 inch S&W #18 Combat Masterpiece.  When I really need accuracy, then I turn to a S&W #41 or a High Standard Victor.  Both shoot like a good rifle if you can hold them steady enough.

I really like the Ruger Auto Loaders, but despite I got a Ruger Single Six convertable due to its versitility in that it can digest a wider variety of ammo than the auto loader will.  If I need more fire power than that maybe its time to break out the FAL!

Taurus M-94, stainless 9 shot revolver with 4" bbl. Very handy and accurate. I carry 1 or 2 speedloaders. Almost always a dirt clod or something needs shootin before I get back in the truck. Killed a bunch of rabbits with it, a skunk, a prairie dog, a rattlesnake and a badger. The action on mine is so nice that I don't miss the auto-loader. It just works for me.

I've always been a revolver type.  Even now, the only 22 handgun I have is a Ruger Single Six.  And I hadn't shot it in a long time until recently.

However, right now I'm in the market for a Browning Buckmark.  It was recomnmended by members here who's opinion I respect.  I understand it's accurate and reliable but the determining factor is it's suitability for my wife's particular needs and condition.  So, Like any other purchase, I guess it boils down to your own preferences and needs.

Like Bigeasy I've got a (scoped) Victor that shoots very well. And I've got an old unmarked Ruger MK1 that's dead nuts reliable and shoots almost as well. I had a Colt SA revolver but got tired of ejecting the cases and loading it. I guess I'm not into 22 revolvers.
For woods walking I'll have my 4" K-frame M-19 on my hip. It feels good in my hand and shoots better than I can hold.

Really, I simply don't care what 22 I'm carying.

As long as it's a revolver.

Fixed sights.

Single action.

Like the Super Bearcats the best, but any fixed sight SA 22 is fine.

But I do have to admit, for the last 2 or 3 years it's been a tough job talking myself out of one of the Walther P22's.
Dang little thing just feels so right in my hand, and I can't think of one single reason to get one. Everything I dislike in a pistol, adjustabel white dot sights, semi-auto, plastic, ugly, probibly have one in the next couple weeks, LOL!!!!!

Anyone help talk me out of it?????   Please?????

For me, it depends on what I want to do with it.  For just plain fun shooting and plinking with any 22 rimfire ammo, it's hard to beat the Single-Six.  For rough carry and "don't know what I'll be shooting" I carry a Taurus 94 stainless with rubber grips.  A DA is just easier to reload than a SA and (I think, anyway) more rugged than an auto.  If I'm hunting tree rats or wabbits, I take the Mk II.  It'll only shoot long rifle ammo, but it's like a little rifle with Mini-Mags.

Lots of help, huh??  I just like 22 rimfire handguns, so I guess which one to take at any particular time is more of a preference thing than a hard fast rule.  I guess that if I have to take just one, I'd be very sad, but it would be the Mk II.
Life's too short to waste any of it,

For shooting at the range I prefer semi autos to revolvers.  I have three semi autos and they all work really well and are accurate in my hands.  However, I prefer a revolver for carrying around in the woods for two reasons.  The main one is that I have a phobia against carrying a handgun on my person with a round in the chamber and safety on.  This is the only way my semi autos can be carried and be ready for a fast shot.  Second all my semi autos are large and relatively heavy pistols.  So I have a taurus 94 with a 4 inch barrel for general carry, hunting and plinking.  I used to use a Ruger single six for my trail gun but once I bought the Taurus and got it slicked up and sighted in the ruger became superfluous so I sold it.

For me it's a toss up.  Whatever I feel like grabbing I guess.  I use a revolver for trapping usually.  Kinda like the semi for just walking in the woods.  I am starting to really love the look and feel of revolvers the more I look at them.

Havn't goten the P22 yet, but I can hear it calling me as I set here tonite.  Dang, I hate adjustable sights, whitd dot sightw, plastic pistols, semi-auto pistols, just HATE them. But that P22 just keeps calling me, and it feels soooooo gooooood in my hand.

I like them all in 22lr.
I've got a couple auto's that I shoot regularly.
A S&W 617 I shoot a lot.
And a couple old High Standard single action I shoot some also.

Kind of depends on what mindset I'm in.

As a lefty (left HANDED, that is) I find revolvers just easier to manipulate. I do have a Ruger MkIII but generally just use it for plinking. We have a small farm and I usually have a Heritage Arms 3" Birdshead in the back pocket of my jeans, for rattlers and such. I also have a Single Six I keep loaded with magnums and sometimes slip that into a front pocket instead.

I want both as well.  Have the Buckmark, an awesome pistol by the way.  Want a Ruger Single Six convertable and will get one eventually.

I have 2 semi autos, and IIRC 21 revolvers, so yeah it's revolvers for me.
Nothing against my semis, but the revolvers ALWAYS go bang.

I've owned both and always end up with the wheelgun. My stainless Single Six has been with me now for 15 or so years and isn't going anywhere. With me it's a nostalgia thing but also a dependability and versatility thing. I know it's going to shoot ratshot, 22 short, long, long rifle or magnums anytime and everytime I cock it and pull the trigger. To each his own as most of my buddies carry autos.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking semi's at all. I have them too and they have their place and some people do prefer them, I'm trying to find out why most people choose one over the other, as I choose a revolver most all the time.

I really can't say that I favor one over the other.  It just depends on the mood I'm in and to some extent what I am doing.  I do like the nostalgia of a revolver, especially a blued single action like my Single six pictured bellow.  But then again, burning threw a magazine in my MKII seeing how fast I can take out a gang of rouge soda cans or outlaw clay pigeons is a real hoot.

I have both : for target shootin/plinkin an auto with a good set of adjustable sights is the way to go and it makes an OK woods runnin gun but to be safe the slide needs to be on an empty chamber: for woods running a good revolver is the way to go , it can be fully loaded until use . Both are accurate enough to smack a squarrel if needed but in the woods the revolver has the edge . I have the following :

Taurus 94-4" 22mag
Charter Arms Pathfinder -4"  22LR
Ruger Single Six-51/2" 22/22mag
Browning Challenger II -6" 22lr
Smith & Wesson -Model 22A - 4" 22lr
