Ruger Bearcat
« on: March 28, 2010, 03:24:52 PM »
I have been looking for a carry pistol for almost any adventure in the outdoors and it suddenly hit me how large all my handguns chambered for the LR are.
I have been considering a Ruger bearcat for this chore because of it's size. It seems that it would fit for any sort of "Carry" situation and would make a fine take-along for my airgun seaaions in rattelsnake country.
Does anyone own a Beaqrcat and use it as described?
Seems the perfect size for everything for me...

I carry mine a lot here in Pa. It loves the CCI Mini Mags and it shoots the Wal Mart bulk packs well too. I used to carry a 4 3/4" Single Six and it does seem big for a 22 now that I carry the Bearcat.

The only alteration was the addition of the #5 basepin from Belt Mtn.  I think she deserves some stags in the near future also. Hoslter is a Simply Rugged Threepersons style.

They look great with open sights and custom 'smiths like Dave Clements will put a set on for you...all it takes is $.  It is a worthwhile investment if you ask me.  Boge Quinn over at Gunblast has a particular soft spot for them and has some great specimens like you mentioned.  He's posted a few pics over at singleactions.com from time to time.  Sweet little guns.

I agree with zoner. Put adjustable sights on them and I'll add one to my collection. Stainless would be sweet too.

I just got my SS Bearcat back from C&S with J frame sights. I can actually see the sights! What a concept! I tried it out this weekend. Works great. Too bad they don't come this way from the factory.

I've been carrying Bearcats on my outdoor treks since the mid 60's.   With my first Old Model Bearcats, and with an Old Model Super Bearcat I upgraded to in 1971.   Sold the others but I still have that Super Bearcat.   It wears custom Koa wood grips made for me by the great David Wayland many, many moons ago (he's in his 80's now).   My preferred carry for all of them was always just stuffed in my back pocket until I finally had a custom cross draw holster made a few years ago.   As for the sights, you all put too much stock in adding adjustable sights to one IMO.   Lots of shooting with your Bearcat soon teaches you where it shoots, and with that shooting experience it will shoot where you point it without needing ajustable sights on it.    I filled lots of camp cook pots with mine over the years, dispatched critters that needed dispatching and plinked away 10's of thousands of rounds without any need for better sights (because I don't use the sights).   So to me, putting adjustable sights on a Bearcat would be as bad as sending my trusty old model in to Ruger and letting them put a transfer bar safety in it.

If you really just have to have adjustable sights, my other easy carry years ago (also stuffed in my back pocket) was a S&W Model 63 4".   It too will do the job great, but I liked the Bearcat better so the 63 went to live with someone else years ago.

YMMV

Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

My Super Bearcat is among one of my favorite woods carry guns.  Pick a favorite load, then regulate your sights as needed for that load.  Perfect size for back pocket carry.

One of the guys I used to shoot with let me borrow a used Bearcat that he had bought.  I was amazed at how well this gun could shoot as it is on the small side, but the accuracy was really good, I put about 40 rounds through it.  I am glad Ruger brought this model back as it would be a nice light weight trail gun.  I currently use a Buckmark for a backup pistol when crow hunting with my shotgun.  If I did not have the Browning, I would get a Bearcat.

It's all personal opinions, but adding adjustable sights to a Bearcat would flat destroy the gracefull lines of the gun. Find the load it likes the best and file the sights to hit POA, and never worry about them again. One of mine hit POI/poa just right with the Federal bulk pack ammo, the other I had to open the rear sight on the right slightly with a file to get it to POI?POA with the same ammo. Havn't used anything else in either of them for years now.

Great little guns with fixed sights, and no problems carying them in a pocket or holster worrying about adjustable sights getting knocked out of adjustment.

Come to think of it, I don't own a single pistol or revolver any more with adjustable sights. Gone to fixed sights on all of them.
