I need a barrel nut wrench
« on: March 26, 2010, 05:54:40 PM »
My 24 inch 22-250 barrel came from Midway today. I haven't looked around locally but my previous gunsmith retired and this is what I consider a simple task I can do it myself if I have a Wrench to do it with. The Barrel is a Adams and Bennet, came blued and is perfect inside. Nicely done barrel. I'd like to borrow, rent or buy the wrench. I don't expect to do a lot of barrel changes so I don't really need another tool floating around my shop.

You need to find someone close and go over there and get it changed out. The driving time will take more than changing it out. You can come over to my place, but I am in Northern Indiana and Texas is a fur piece. An action wrench of some kind is also needed. Be it a padded vice or the real thing. If you are going to do it yourself, Action wrenches can be had at SSS or Midway. I got mine free with an A&B barrel I bought - it was a special, $100 for a SS fluted 223 barrel+wrench. :o Good Luck and Good Shooting

My wife is from Indiana and just got back from a funeral there. You might check out the midway Website, at present they have A&B 223 and 22-250 barrels on sale. I got my 22-250 barrel for less than $88. shipped, the 223 barrels are around $65. before shipping. A barrel wrench is $40. plus shipping at Midway.

rickt,

What city and state are you in? Maybe somebody's close by with one?

I live a bit south of Fort Worth, Tx. I called around a bit today looking for a gunsmith and it seems a lot of them are going out of business. I have access to a set of headspace gauges though I planned on setting the barrel to fit the brass I have already fired in another rifle.

I don't know if you're familiar with this site, but try posting here:

or here (same site, different forum):

You may find someone lives close enough you can just drive over and borrow their stuff. Good site for Savage stuff btw.

You should fit the barrel to your resized brass not to what has been fired in another rife.  The wrenches are cheap, just buy one and save it for later.  I have a wrench, but shipping both ways would be more than the cost of the tool.  Larry

You are right about shipping costs being too high. As soon as I get thru the many spring chores and Easter I am going to order one.
