Big hands .45
« on: November 13, 2003, 08:08:10 PM »
You know what they say about guys with big hands right?  They need guns with bigger grips.  I want to purchase a .45 for target shooting and getting started in comptitive shooting events (least that's the excuse the wife gets - I just want another gun   ).  I love the size of the grips on my ruger P95 with the addition of the hogue handall on it.  I was going to buy a Kimber, but I just can't get used to the thinner grips.  I have to admit, I have not been able to hold a Ten II series of the Kimber - how does that compare to the single stack?  I don't think I want a P series .45, but I would like something with some beef in the grips (without addition of Hogues - I'd like to be able to use it in a factory class compete.).  Any recommendations?  Thank you in advance.

Sincerely,
Tim Wieneke

not to argue the point at all but my p220 just came with houges. nope i didn't order it that way.
my investigation into this-i had never even thought about the ergonomics of grips and all the pallaverin on the subject went rat over ma head-lead to a conclusion. i have a large hand but short fingers-well short in ratio to the palm. i found, after lookin around, that a regular grip size was, like you, a little uncomfortable. too much of the finger wrapped around the trigger and my fingers were touching the palms of my hand. not enough gun to hang on to, i guess, is a pretty good way to describe the feeling.
some of the extremely built up grips felt as though i was holding the weapon in my finger tips. i have yet to find a grip that is perfect-well not a great deal of investigation here-just a couple of places that had grips on handles, if'n ya unnerstand.
the houges felt as good as any without a custom order-who knows with me, that might be next. i have houges on tha p239 and tha p220 came with em.
just my thinking.

I love my hk pistols.
the large grip and extra large trigger guard makes handling these pistols a blessing.
very accurate as far as I can tell.
not as pretty as a 1911,but for a factory polymer pistol, they are tops in my book.

The Glock 21 is a thick-gripped pistol. They are reliable and you can find all kinds of accessories and compitition parts for them. I have been considering a Glock, I don't presently own one. But the Brownells catalogue has a ton of stuff for them, second only to the M-1911.

Ha! Looks like I am, don't it William? Actually, I don't even own one. I have been considering a G-30 for carry, and spent yesterday at a local gun show checking out a lot of Glocks. Just a coincidence, I had the Glocks fresh in my mind when I read the two posts about .45s.

Thank you for all the advice thus far.  I had forgotten about the HK pistols.  When I was 18 I promised myself I'd get one of those when I was 21....guess I just forgot that promise over time....

Just out of curiosity, has anyone tried any of the kimber Ten II series?  I haven't gotten a chance to handle one yet, but I'm wondering if the handles any thicker since it's set up to handle a 14 round mag.

Thanks,
Tim

The Pardini 45s are good competitive, very accurate, pistols for people with big hands. See them at www.nygord-precision.com

Tim:  have you thought about a ParaOrdinance in 45 with a double stack magazine - they should be large enough for you to handle comfortably.  HTH.  Mikey.

I have to agree with Mikey. I have two Para's and an Enterprise (Another double stack 1911) and I love 'em. you can get a Pierce rubber grip that has the finger grooves in it. What a sweet set up! Check them out....I think you'll agree!
