Turkey choke for Encore shotgun
« on: March 19, 2010, 09:10:24 AM »
Anyone have any experience/info on turkey chokes for the Encore shotgun. The factory choke in the turkey barrel is just OK.

I've just seen pix of camo shotgun barrels for the Encore that show a choke extending out of the end of the barrel, so I assume that it is a full/extra full choke designed for Turkeys.

I have a standard Encore 12 ga 3" with a TC tURKEY choke and it has worked well for me.

Mine patterned very good with some ammo not so great with other.  Having a senior moment on which one.  I check my notes when I get home tonight.  My barrel is the 20" version.

Federal Premium 3" #5's patterns the best in my barrel.  At 40yd. I still had 5-7 lethal hits in the head & neck.  That's a dead bird! 8)

Appreciate the comments guys. Yes #5 shot works best in my gun also but it is still not up there with some of the other easily available aftermarket chokes for other guns. I have have not yet but will check with the manfacturer to see if other brands of chokes will fit the encore. If I get anything worth passing on it will be posted later.

Thanks

Winchester and mossberg chokes will fit I think some others. Do a search for previous posts this has been discussed numerous times. I have had two 12 gauge turkey barrels a 20 inch and a 24 inch. Both of them kicked like a mule. I guess I should have kept one of the barrels as turkey hunting you don't have to shoot it that often. It does make for a sweet light to carry turkey shotgun.

The Encore turkey barrel uses the Browning invector style choke tube. I have a Truglo gobble stopper and a Primos jelly head, the Truglo patterns best with the new Hevi-shot magnum blend in my gun. Word to the wise, you had better be holding on when you drop the hammer!

Good deal I will try a Truglo. I am in 100% agreement with the kick's like a mule statement. I found a mercury supressor on ebay (9 or 11 oz) can't remember and installed it in the stock. That along with a slip on limbsaver recoil pad made a HUGE difference.

Yep...I use the Flex-tech Pro Hunter stock and a Sims pad and we're still talking some serious recoil.  If you're like me, most of my turkey hunting is done from the base of a big oak tree and one does NOT want to lean back against the tree trunk and fire a 3" round out of an Encore.  The turkey won't be the only thing killed.  But it sho' do carry nice!

I use a flex-tech thumb hole to help hang on, it seems to help some.

Anybody Shot a 20ga. Encore for Turkey??  Just got one and don't know if I should let the 12yr old shoot it or give him my benelli with a recoil reducer and Pad.   Waiting for a Choke for the 20 so I can pattern it.  Thanks.

I'd put the Benelli in his hands, but if he is like my boy that will cost you more than letting him drop the hammer on the TC.....LOL
