Weird refund check with a notice from the IRS
« on: March 17, 2010, 06:02:34 PM »
Got my income tax refund check in the mail. But it was roughly twice the amount listed on my income tax form. A notice from theDepartment of Treasury came with it and this is was it said:

"About your refund check...The amount of the enclosed refund check is different from the amount shown on your return. You should be receiving a notice in a few days that explains why the amount of the check is different and what additional information, if any, you may need to provide to the Internal Revenue Service. This notice will explain how to contact the Internal Revenue Service if you need to provide additional information or have questions about the notice. Please do not call us until you receive the notice. If you are certain that the amount of the refund check is too high, please return the original check to the Internal Revenue Service Center where you filed you tax return with a letter explaining the reasons why the amount is too high, and we will send you the correct amount. If you do not return the check, you may owe interest."

OK, what the heck?  I just cashed the check, then read the notice, then said "what a bunch of crap!"
Now what?

I got my refund about two weeks ago, direct deposit. It was 400.00 more than I figured I had coming. Today I got a letter in the mail from the IRS. They said they found a way I could get a bigger refund and made the adjustment for me and sent me the larger amount. Thats pretty much unheard of isn't? I am going to set down and look it over and make sure it's right before I spend the money. I don't want to pay for their mistake. And you know I would, interest and all. If they harrassed a guy in Ca. over .4 cents like I heard on the news, I don't want them bugging me over their mistake.

Thanks for mentioning your experience. I cashed it but socked the money away as originally planned.  So if'n they screwed up, I'll have no problem giving it back. I've never had this happen before.

Me neither. Seems a little fishy.

I got something like that about 25 years ago. It was caused by a math error I made. I accepted the money and quit doing my own taxes.

It really stinks when they believe, after their mistake, they can claim INTEREST from you for holding "their" money.  What is good for the goose...why don't they send each of US interest after holding our money for a YEAR?  It SHOULD work both ways!!!

Last year, after going over and over our taxes and going line by line by the instructions, we ended up paying in a little bit.  A check showed up from the IRS for $577.  They said they refigured our taxes and found that we paid too much.  I just said, oh boy; cashed it and never looked back.

We owe some this year too and I'm hoping that when I get around to sending it in that the same humanitarian checks it.  Never look a gift horse in the mouth.

Same thing happened to me. The letter said I missed a "Making Work Pay" tax credit.

Sounded good to me.

The,"Making Work Pay", and "Government Retiree Credit" and using a higher standard deduction is the reason they gave me for doubling my return. Sounds real fishy to me. I NEVER worked for the Gov. and I'm not retired. I only worked about 6 months out of last year. Maybe that has something to do with it. That is the only thing different in the last 15yrs. I'm going to try to check it out today. I'm not paranoid, I don't think, I just don't trust those boobs at the IRS. As far as not looking a gift horse in the mouth? I bet alot of banks, car companies, and others wish they had before they took money from the Gov. I mean they just went to the front door and harrassed a guy in California over a .4 cent mistake. I have rounded to the nearest dollar figuring my taxes for ever. There is probably a SWAT team waiting for me  outside right now!........Okay maybe I'm a little paranoid. :o

Maybe it's just governmental feel good money!
They are trying to make you think they are watching out for you.
Better hold on to your wallets real tight.
This way maybe you won't feel so bad about having to pay a little more the next time around.
You know the leaches in DC, they ain't going to just give free money out to everyone with out having a back up plan to get it all back and then some.
Maybe next year they will say it was a mistake and you owe it all back plus interest and penalty?
Who knows what lurks in the minds of the mindless ones?!!!

http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=204447,00.html  : Information on the Make Work Pay thing. It's part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. It's confusing, as usual, and some people benefit from it and some get the shaft. I have to read it a couple more times to try to figure it out but it looks like some people might be in for a surprise this year and next year. Some will get more and some will owe eventhough they expect to get something back. It applies to 2010 also, so we might want to look at it to keep from getting a bad surprise this time next year. I guess I qualified  for the max allowable of 400.00 for filling as single because of my income bracket. Something about getting burned next year if we aren't careful about our deductions and stuff. I'm not sure.       The letter I got must be a form letter and included the Government Retiree Credit in case it applied to me. see at, http://www.unionplus.org/retiree-credit

If all you folks are concerned about getting extra money from the government, just cash the check and sit on it. Smile while you remember that the Sec of the Treasury cheated on his taxes and you didn't.
Also, it was reported today that over 100,000 federal workers owe back taxes. If it still bothers you, send the check to St. Judes Childrens Cancer Hospital. They will know what to do with the money.

be careful what you read into it..
i believe old lenin an hitler both ,,did all they could to win the hearts of the people ,,before they got total control..then all they wanted was fear from the masses ,so they could control them better..jmo slim
be very very careful ,,you don t get conned these days..the liberals in deep dookie an they know it.. they pulling out all the stops now..i really wouldn t be surprised if they didn t go radical with a power grab..if the elections go against them..they absolutely believe they know whats best .. and it aint gov,, of the people,, by the people ,for the people
