Old West Treasure Stories
« on: March 14, 2010, 09:20:22 AM »
Has anyone out there heard any good treasure stories from the days of the outlaws.  Here's one.  My brother lived, with his wife, near Dustin, Oklahoma, for a while.  He picked up and relayed this story:

A group of bothers, whose parents lived up off a creek near Dustin, rode to a town some distance away and robbed the town's bank.  After the robbery, which garnered them an amount of gold coins, the boys rode back to their home place but not the house.  Not wanting to draw a possible posse to their parents' home, they camped out down on the creek.  The possible posse became a reality and jumped them at their camp site.  One of the boys hurriedly dumped out their coffee pot, poured the gold coins into it, and ran down the creek.  He was caught and killed, but the coffee pot and gold was never found--according to the story.

Only one of the younger boys survived the shooting.  He spent many years in prison.  When he was released, then an old man, he reportedly returned and spent a lot of time searching in and near the creek for the loot.  He never found it--according to the story.

I'll be honest.  If this story is true, if the older boy ran down the creek with the coffee pot of gold coins, and if he was then killed by members of the posse, I suspect that one or more members of the posse found the gold--possibly all of them.  Can you think of a better reason to join a posse chasing bank robbers?
Can you think of a better cover story to tell when you got back home?

Here's one more.  As the story goes, an outlaw carrying loot--I think it was gold coins--attempted to cross the Arkansas River just east of the present Highway 97 bridge southwest of Sand Springs, Oklahoma.  He, according to the story, went into the water from the south with the loot and came out on the north side without the loot.  He was captured on the north side of the river.  Reportedly, no one ever found the gold.
