Which rings?
« on: March 13, 2010, 06:35:14 AM »
I am getting ready to order 2- Redfield 2-7x33  scopes for 2 of my Handi's. One is a .357 mag and the other is a 20 gauge. Both have the stock Handi scope rail from the factory.

Do I need medium rings, or will low rings be tall enough?

Thanks!

I have the 3-9x40 Redfield, lots of clearance with medium Burris Signature Zees(.270" tall top of rail to bottom of tube) will mount in the low standard Zee(.130" tall) with a little hammer spur trimming, this is with the power ring mounted over the hammer.

Thats gonna depend on the rings you choose.  ;D  For the most part I am able to use PRW or Maxima rings in low, weaver 4X4's in medium on a factory base. With Leupold, Burris, Nikon and old Redfield scopes.

Sometimes its quite close, but clears. Once I have ground a bit on the hammer to get better clearance. But usually not necessary.

I am thinking about using the inexpensive Leupold Rifleman rings, maybe the PRW rings.

Low PRW aren't very low, they're about the same as medium Sig Zee rings at ~.250", low Rifleman rings are just a tad taller than low Zee rings at .148".

The Leupold Rifleman series of rings are bottom of the barrel and not at all in the same league as ZEE, PRW, Maxima rings. Some find them satisfactory, I prefer a better ring.

I have both low and medium Leupold Rifleman rings, and am fairly certain low rings will not work with the std hammer.
I have medium Rifleman rings on a long fixed power scope and the 1" tube just clears the std hammer.
You may find that medium rings are not tall enough to clear the magnificiation adjustment and you need to slide the scope back toward the butt end. I think I used medium Rifleman rings when I had a Bushnell Legend 2-7x32.
The difference between people who do stuff and people who don't do stuff is that the people who do stuff do stuff.
