Please help me with some research
« on: November 12, 2003, 11:57:40 AM »
I have been looking all over and can't find info on the Sako 308 that I have.  I have always heard that Sako rifles were free floated (and my others ones are).  But this one is older (dont know how old but do have a request in to Berretta for an answer) and has a piller or pressure point right at the sling stud on the forend.  To my knowledge this rifle is all original without modifications.  Can anyone give me some info or point me in the right direction for info?

Thanks,

long

longwinters,
Looking at my sources for Sako, we're going to need a lot more information than Sako.308 before we can help you out.  I think a good beginning would be:
barrel length
all engraved lettering and location of that information
wood or fibreglass stock; matte or gloss finish, etc. w/ length of pull
butt plate or recoil pad, checkered?
What type forearm...semibeavertail
Sights or not and is receiver grooved for scope; sling swivals?
.308 caliber, I presume it is a type III medium action bolt w/ 3 front locking lugs and external extractor?
detachable magazine, 4-5-6 shot?
Weight of gun
Can you supply a photograph?

Sako was imported by Stoeger Industries, Wayne, NJ (formerly by Garcia Corp.)

Thanks for your interest savage.  Here is what I have. Written on left side of barrel, Sako cal.308 win made in Finland.  m591.  first few ser. #'s 863_ _ _.  21.25" barrel. 2 lug bolt.  Has drop box not a clip. Holds 4 +1. Wood w/ blue barrel.  Recoil pad says Finland Sako and is that brown/orange color. Wood is gloss finish in a fairly dark wood with lots of grain.  Checkering on forend and grip.  Not drilled for sights.  Receiver has regular Sako scope mounts, they look the same as my newer Sako's. I do not know how to measure length of pull, but from trigger to end of recoil pad is 14 1/8th".  Width of forend at tip is 1 3/8th".  Receiver length (w/o bolt) is 6".  Total length of rifle is 42 5/8th".  Hard to say about weight but with a 3x9x40 Bushnell Elite it is probably about 8 pounds or less.  Definitely lighter than my son's Sako in 30-06. Also the bolt release button is on left side of receiver at the rear.

Rifle magazine Numbers 100 and 101 have "The Sako Story".  It is a real informative article about their older rifles.

longwinters,
The  modern medium action (type III) in .308 that I find is a model75 "Hunter" with the new bolt featuring three bolt lugs with external extractor positioned under the bolt.   Detachable magazine, 22 inch barrel, 41.75 to 45.6 " overall length.  Made 1997 to date.

Sako model "Forester Sporter" used a mauser type medium action in  22-250; .243; .308Win 5-shot mag.   23 inch bbl. w/ sights.  Sporter stock w/ Monte Carlo cheek piece, checkered pistol grip and forearm, swivels.   Imported 1957-71.

Sako model "Hunter Lightweight" w/ 21.5 inch bbl. AII-Sako (medium action) .308 Monte Carlo oil-finished stock. Imported 1985-97.
