Hi Guys
For my first post I would like to ask a question. What is the recoil like in the 300wsm? I own a .308, 7mm-08, and a 45-70. I am thinking about purchasing one for long shots and the possibility of going Elk or Caribou hunting in the future. I have never shot a 300WM so I don't know what to compare the wsm against. I don't want a gun that I don't want to shoot or get flinchy on. Hope you can help me out.

First let me Welcome you to Graybeard Outdoors. The best forum on the net for hunters/shooters going. The posted recoil for the .300 WSM is as follows as compared to a .30-06;

.300 WSM with a 180 gr. at 2,860 fps. from an 8.0 rifle gives 26.1 lbs. of free recoil
.30-06 with a 180 gr. at 2,700 fps. from an 8.0 rifle gives 20.0 lbs. of free recoil

Trldad,

You might think about the 270 WSM - shoots a 160 grain nosler partition at around 2900 - 3000 fps and will handle any elk out to where you should stop shooting at them. The Winchester Coyote is a great rifle for this round.

Thanks guys for the welcome and all the help. The recoil chart will help me get some perspective on comparitive recoil. It doesn't seem to be to bad.
Crow-feather I have been bouncing back and forth between the 270 and 300 wsm for the last two weeks. the reason I am leaning towards the 300 is because a caribou or Elk hunt will be a once in a lifetime opportunity for me and I don't want to have the minimum caliber necessary to put the animal down I would prefer to have some room for error on my part.

Trldad, I bought a Tikka T3 in 300WSM last month. It is a pretty light rifle for the caliber (6 3/8 lbs). I have shot 14 rounds through it, half of which I used some padding for my shoulder as I didnt want to develop a flinch. But, even without a little extra padding it didn't leave me with a soar shoulder. What I did notice is the barrel really jumps off the bench. I shot a 30-06 for 12 years and felt recoil was similar, again the short mag just seemed to jump up a bit. I made a post a few weeks ago, you might take a look. Hope this helps, Postman

Sorry to interupt this post but what do you put in for powder weight in the recoil calc. if you are comparing factory ammo? Set it to 50 and leave it the same for all calibers? I've seen these before and they seem to be way off if you leave them blank.

I have found the the recoil calculator to be very accurate if you consider a couple key points.

1st - find a good load in a guide, shot out of the same length barrel that you are using. If it is longer or shorter add or take away around 80 fps per in of the barrel: longer add: shorter take away.
If the published load is shot out of a 26" barrel and you are using a 22" barrel - take away 320 fps in the formula.

2nd - the powder charge is very important to give correct recoil calculation. Most published loads are never as hot as you can buy factory, so you will need to add 1 grain of powder to gain 100 fps in velocity.

3rd - weight of the rifle- In this formula the weight of the rifle can make a big difference. So I weighed the rifle loaded the way I would be carring it to the woods. This is one factor that can be exact.

These are my approximations and are not exact or scientific. I was trying to get my new 7mm-08 loaded to where my son could shoot it and get the recoil down to that of a .243. It would also allow me to load the bullet more toward factory velocities as he grew.

I'm looking at the new Savage "varmit" model in 300 WSM with a fluted heavy barrel, accutrigger and button rifled. For the money it looks like the most bang for the buck. Supposed to weigh 8.75 lbs without the scope. I don't mind the extra 2 lbs or so over a standard hunting unit if it is accurate. If you own a 300 Winchester Short Mangnum, how does it shoot for you? What rifle are you shooting the 300 in?

I have purchased a HOWA barreled action and am putting a BOYD laminate stock on it, a Nikon scope with Leupold rings. The setup should be ready by next week. I can't wait. I looked at other options but I really like wood stocks and this seemed to be the best "bang" for the "buck". I will let all of you know what I think of it and how it shoots. Sounds interesting. What did the barreled action cost you? I understand the Weatherby Vanguard is a Howa action with a Weatherby name attached.

Yes Howa makes the barrelled actions for the Weatherby Vanguard line and I purchased a barrelled action in 300wsm for $320. should be ready by next week.

First off;am glad I found this board.Some very good info to be had here.On query about .300 wsm;I see the math,but till you shot one...well.I own a mod 70 .300 wsm.I use 180 gr. power points.Don't hold it too close if using a scope,of course it makes a difference what your eye relief is.How does it kick?I've never been kicked by a mule,but I can imagin it is something along the same line :lol: I also own a .375 win using 220 gr. ammo and the .300 kicks much harder.But,it doesn't matter when the game crosses in front of you;you will never think about it.I have heard of folks fitching before they shot cause they worry about the kick.I can't imagin this,but I guess it could happen.Anyway,I love my .300.......................Rick

I am doing the same exact thing with the exception of the rings/bases. My dealer ripped me $375 for the stainless. Got the Boyd Ross stock also. I will top it off with a Zeiss. I might get a 270 WSM later. Let us know how it works out for you...

:-D Just recieved my 300wsm and I am happier than a pig in mud. I started to break in the barrel with the 150 grain balistic tips and was a little dissapointed. At 100 yds all the shots were on a pie plate not very good. I switched to 180 grain power points and I have a three shot group with a neat little triangle and they are touching.

I am imressed and so happy. Recoil was not bad at all. Maybe a little heavier that a 30-06. but not bad. I did encounter one problem though, my brand new Boyd stock cracked right behind the action within the first 3 shots. I brought it back to the gun store and they said it would be fine to shoot if I wanted to use it for the rest of Deer season and they would stand behind it IF Boyd would not but they wont know untill they send the stock back to boyd. Thanks for all of your help guys in making my decision I can see it was a good one.

I was thinking the same thing. It kinda sounds like it wasn't, but even then, the stock shouldn't have cracked.
