223 Lever actions?
« on: November 11, 2003, 07:48:12 PM »
Has anyone made one?  Does anyone think there'd be a market for them?  I'm thinking something configured like a BLR but using a few AR-15 parts since they're so common and affordable.

I'm thinking they'd be good for varminting in states where you can't hunt with semi-autosm like PA.

Browning chambers the lever action in 223 but I have never seen one.  They even chambered the original 81 BLR in 222.

.223's shoot just fine in a BLR and it handles great.  Slick as a mink.  Easier to tune than a '99.  Mine's not for sale.

Are they current production?  How are they weightwise?  My concept was for a lightweight compact one.

Just checked their website and the BLR Lightweight (new BLR'81 with aluminum action, not Lightning) with 20" barrel weighs just under 7lbs but is not listed in .223.  22-250 is the smallest presently listed, but over the years calibers have come and gone and come again (example-.358 listed again).  Keep an eye on the web and Gun List, they show up there periodically.

Just how did your tune your BLR?

Had a local gunsmith clean up the trigger a little, then I slapped a scope on it.  That's all I did.  Factory loads stay around 1 to 1 1/8 inches.  Handloads do better.  It may not be a 500 yard prairie dog piece, but nothing is better for just walking the perimeters and senderos.

It is not a 223, but the 219 Zipper is a rimmed cartridge originally designed for the Winchester 64 rifle. It was not too successful as the round nosed bullet required for tubular magazines is not the ideal for accuracy. It is a good round and can be loaded to 223 produce ballistics.

Marlin also manufactured a lever gun in 219 Zipper.

I have rebarreled both a Marlin 336 & a Winchester 94 to 219 Zipper. It makes into a good turkey or coyote gun. I have not tried them, but I would think the plastic tipped bullets would be safe in a tubular magazine.

Brass is hard to come by, but I reform from 30-30.
