Hi need some input....am going to make a custom rifle on a Savage 110 short action, and there are 2 options for me as I see it.....hahaha..... I want either the 260 Rem or the 7mm-8 Rem....need you guys to open up and tell me what you think of both cals in terms of accuracy and killing power...think both will do want I want them to do up to Elk size critters at any senseable range I want to shoot....anyway your thoughts will be appreciated.....ww1

My neighbor has a 7mm-08 and it is pretty accurate and works great on deer, but i do not know how good it would do on Elk.  To me both calibers are a little small for Elk.

7mm-08 is better bet as it will handle 150-175 grain bullets better than a 260 that stops at about 140. That said consider the 284 for a short action, as Melvin Forbes says........the most horsepower in the smallest package going. Fred Moreo at Sharp Shooter Supply can tweak the feed rails for you and there is plenty of brass around for the 6.5x284 thats dominating with the benchrest crowd right now, just run it thru a 284 die and you're set. If you decide to go 7mm-08 think about a twist rate on the barrel that will support the heavier loads. Kevin Rayford makes a super stock with skelton bedding block under the name of Stockade stocks. Timney and SSS both make an excellant trigger while SSS does a good recoil lug. Just get the action squared and trued and throw a Lilja or Shilen barrel on it headspaced to your dies and your ready to do some serious accurate shooting. I just had a poor mans custom gun built on a stainless Savage short action and its already at 1/2" on the first load I worked up with a sporter contour barrel, expect it will get in the fours with a little load tweaking on my part. Good Rifle Building!
