Mini 30 thoughts
« on: March 05, 2010, 03:32:46 AM »
I am thinking about buying a Mini 30 for hog hunting.  How well does these shoot. I have had a Mini 14 and it did ok but I have heard a few people say that they thought the Mini 30 where not that good.  When I asked what ammo they where shooting, the reply was any kind of cheap ammo that they could get.

I want to know how well the Mini 30 shoots using a good quality ammo, not cheap ammo.

Booyah, the Mini30 has worked well for me on both hogs and deer. My favorite brands of ammo are Fiocchi and Sellier & Bellot. They are a little more expensive than Wolf & the other junky Russian stuff, but still quite a bit cheaper than Winchester, Eagle, & Remington. Yet quality-wise, they are every bit as good.

Mine is an older rifle and with good handloads it will produce 1 1/4" groups 1 1/2" - 2" with Remington Corelocks.
Not real tack driver but plenty good within the useful range of the cartridge.
The older versions were noted for lack of accuracy but there are ways to fix that.
Supposedly Ruger has worked out those accuracy issues on the new Minis.
I am happy with my Mini I've used it on deer and hogs with great success I bought it new in 1990. With low power scopes they are fast to get on target. although I am thinking about trading out my scope for a reflex type red dot on mine for a bit more speed.
IMO it is the best pig gun made. My lease is overrun with hogs so when I get on them I tend to shoot until I run out of hogs or bullets.
I like the 10 round mags when I'm on the pigs I carry 2 of them, that little Mini will lay a lot of pork down with that much ammo.
A lot of aftermarket mags are not very reliable so I run the factory 5 rnd mags and the 10 rounders from Pro Mag I have had zero problems with these. There are factory 20 rnd mags available now I have not tried them yet.

ive owned two of them a blued on and a stainless both would shoot about 4 inches at a 100 yards. Good enough for deer and pigs out to that range anyway.

I had one and sold it because it wasn't accurate.

I had the SS with Walnut version. It would average 3-4" but if I held  "good"it would do 2.5" or so.  Didnt like the fact that Wolf ammo misfired 3-5 times out of 20, tho they were always 100% reliable 2nd time around. Traded it off for a 16" SS 45 colt Puma.  Then found out later that there is an aftermarket hammer spring made for Wolf ammo.  But I really liked it, other than that. The final straw was when 7.62x39 ammo when up so high priced

My Mini-30 is an excellent hog gun. I hunt in Fla. and Ga. so the hogs are always inside 50 yards and usually inside 20. I tried various ammo and found Winchester softpoints to pattern best in my rifle. I usually just use the factory 5 rd. clip. Promag makes an excellent 10 rd. clip. I just bought the new 20 rd. Ruger factory mag and found it to be perfect. I hunt with open sights. Have also killed one deer with a lung shot which ran about 30 yards before demising.

I have none now but in the past have tried several . Those who posted 4 in at 100 are mostly correct . I had one of the newer ones that was 2.5-3 inch some of the time . I liked them ok until i saw the Socom . I had an SKS that shot tighter groups but it was one ugly rifle .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

having had a mini-14...I'd opt for the Socom...here in California, you can't hunt big game with a 5.56/.223 (at least that used to be the law...i don't know if that's changed or not)

Well I guess I will find out. I bought a Mini 30 and I am going to take it to the range as soon as it gets in.  I will be mainly be hog hunting with this and most shots will be 75 yards or less but I would like for it to shoot 1 1/2- 2' groups at 100 yards.  I will try out a lot of different ammo ( yea-lots of shooting) and see what happens.  I preferr a good brand of ammo. Any certain brand that has done well for you let me know.

Thanks
