My 200.00 Marlin 30 AS
« on: February 28, 2010, 01:35:03 AM »
Reading these posts make me want to show off my new beauty. Guy won it in a raffle in 94. He shot six shots and put it in the closet. I was doing some auto work on his truck and we made a deal. It shoot great ,is my first lever gun and I got hooked. I loaded up some light cast loads for the grandsons  336 and am having a blast with both.

Congrats!!!! Now that you own a lever you have to be carefull of "Marlinitis". It's a condition that only more leverguns will cure. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

So far I have been loading 8,9,and 10 grains Unique under Lyman 311041 and Lee 170's.  I have a bunch of others to try when the weather breaks. Some good folks sent me all kinds of 30 cal fp to try. So far the 8 gr and 170 lees are give a nice cluster at 50 yrds and real mild to shoot.  These will be a learning load for the grandson and I like them to plink with also. A fella just swapped me for some RD 165's I am going to try and I may purchase a Lee six banger  in that design. ;D

I have a 30AS that I am almost finished turning back completely original. They are great guns. Mine shoots 1" @ 50 yards iron sights and I can't see any dot smaller than that @ 50 anyway so....

Well I got my 30AS complete thanks to mcwoodduck. He sent me the screws to complete the project. I am going to take it out this morning for a little plinking.

Yep even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while. No dickering involved I asked he said 200.00, he was happy and I was thrilled. He has been back since and asked if I liked that damn 30/30 and shook his head. He thinks you need a 7mm mag to hunt deer with in the Pa woods, yet again I always used 3006 and 2506 which are my big field guns also. So this is going to be a new adventure. I tell everyone from here on out all my purchases are going to shoot cast bullets. :)

Yup!  But careful work with some woodworking tools and sandpaper can slim that forearm down pretty well.  I've got one--half-magazine version, that somebody butchered trying to do this, but what remains tells me that if he'd been more careful that forearm would have shaped down really nice.  I've always wondered, every time I pick up a lot of Marlin leverguns--what in the world does the Marlin company have against trees????
