Savage Long Action Stock Interchangeability
« on: November 10, 2003, 10:35:41 AM »
I have a Savage 111G in 300 RUM.  I thought the top feeding mag would be A-ok, but it doesn't feed great and I haven't been able to remove it to adjust the feed lips like my dealer/smith suggested.  So I was wondering if it would be possible to modify a detachable mag stock or more drastically modify a different aftermarket long action stock (don't want to screw with the original factory one) to use a detachable mag (of commercial or my own manufacture, though I've never done it before.)  I was thinking one of the Ramline Woodtech Synthetic stocks.  I see only long and short action stocks listed, is there a magnum action that is longer, or will long action stocks fit the Ultra Mag?

Oh, and if there's a secret to getting the fixed mag out of the receiver, I'm game for that too.

Thanks!

There are only 2 lengths of action used in the 110.  The magnum rifles are built on the long action.  The mag box should just pull from the bottom of the action once the rifle is disassembled.  The mag boxes are of sheet metal and out of the action are fairly easy to adjust(bend).  Adjusting them correctly though can be a chore.  The magazine box is what determines feeding in these rifles.  I don't know that Savage ever built a detachable magazine for the 300 RUM, and building a removeable magazine is quite an undertaking...  Fix the top loader and realize feeding is not one of the things most RUM's do well, in any rifle.

I've tried getting it out and I can't figure it out.  I don't believe Savage ever did build a detachable mag version of the RUM.  I think SAKO did, and if I can get my hands on a SAKO mag, I'm thinking I could set up a latching system.  But I'll do what I can to fix the fixerd mag from advice here.
