45 LC front sight
« on: February 26, 2010, 02:14:47 AM »
my last range session confirmed that to use the WGRS peep on the 45 LC carbine barrel you need a front sight .620 high so i scrounged thru my parts box and found a ramp off a Remington rifle(I think) with a countersunk holein the ramp dovetail, and several old insert sights that were too short. I took a sight insert and cut and filed the sight off leaving the dovetail only. This one happened to be brass. Drilled and tapped the brass dovetail with what i had(6/32). Took a 6/32 FH machine screw and reduced(filed) the diameter of the head to fit the countersunk hole in the ramp. Put the piece i made in the barrel dovetail then fitted the screw lenght so i could screw the ramp to the piece i made without the screw bottoming out in the barrel dovetail. Now i have a ramp with the dovetail sitting .200 above the barrel. I also had a post sight "blank" from Brownells i bought a while back and didn't use. Cut,filed, shaped on that a bit and have a .420 post type insert for the ramp. Just need to fit the insert dovetail to the ramp and i'll be good to go @ .620.......all oughta my parts box ;)

Isn't it nice when it all comes together! Speaking of parts box I've been considering this on my BC.

zoner,
Good engineering job! I haven't done anything with mine yet and it still wears the original front sight with the new WGRS rear. I wanted to shoot it for groups, trying different loads and pick my load before I change it to a higher sight. I just want to see where it's hitting and use that to confirm the front sight height. I plan to use a .250" riser with a .450" firesight. So far the weather here isn't being very cooperative and the range I use has been snowed in. I saw a groundhog running around about two weeks ago. I should have shot the little bugger so he couldn't see his shadow anymore.

i shaped the sight insert today and fitted the dovetail on the insert to the ramp dovetail, painted it flat black, and i just got home and used a small vise to press the insert in the ramp....voila,it's done. I was worried that the ramp wouldn't tighten to the barrel properly until I installed the ramp and wanted to move ramp and all to the right a hair...tapped it with a punch and the ramp wouldn't drift till I loosened the screw some....not worried any more ;)
