38Spl +P ammunition in J frames
« on: February 25, 2010, 06:03:12 AM »
Hi.  Sorry if this topic has been brought up before.  I am looking at a Model 60 38Spl with 3" bbl. marked 60-4 on frame.  Is this  Model 60 approved for the use of +P ammunition?  If not what/where in the dash models does the +P ammunition start?  Thank you for your help.

Answered my own question.  Per S&W only Model 60's with a dash code of 9 (60-9) made in 1996 or newer are OK for 38Spl. +P ammunition.  Thanks.

Mine either, I've been packing this same one since 1978 and it's had a truck load of .38+P+ ammo through it and it's never blinked, it's as tight and accurate now as when I got it.

Sorry gents, but that info came from Wayne Goodwin at S&W!!  I to have shot +P out of some older S&W J & K frames in a limited way with no problems.  It's just that I am not willing to pay top dollar for a model 60 (3") that is not rated for +P ammunition!

I think you will find that the OK to use +p came when the fireing pin was moved from the hammer to a frame mounted one . would expect some other changes took place at the same time but with the hole in the frame leading to the shooters face was a concived problem with lawyers . The fact that other k frame guns had the same design made it seen odd . There are articles that cover the mod 60 having its chambers cut to accept 357 mag back before the gun was made to do so.
I don't blame you for not paying top dollar , if it were me i would get the SP-101, have a trigger job done and spend the rest on ammo.

Shootall I like your thinking.  Matter of fact I already have a Ruger SP101 .357  with 3" bbl and I am very impressed with it.  Mine was made in 1993 and has a very good trigger.  Since I usually only shoot 38 +P ammunition I was interested in the adjustable sights of the Model 60-4  with 3" bbl.   However, if it's not rated for +P ammo, I will happily stay with my tried and true SP101.  Thanks for your input.
