Stock stops hammer from cocking
« on: February 24, 2010, 04:56:54 PM »
I bought an unfinished thumbhole stock from High Plains for a G2 Contender.  Now when I tighten the stock bolt, the hammer won't stay cocked.  I can pull it back, but it won't stay.  If I loosen the bolt a turn or two, it works just fine.  I tried with different barrels, but that made no difference.

I can't see anything wrong.  Any ideas?

Thanks
Rob

Green horn guess...

Your counter bore in the stock was set to deep. The bolt hole for the buttstock in the frame is open ended in the encore (contender ???). This is open to the hammer compartment and is probably not allowing you to cock the hammer???

Just my 2 cents.

I had the problem with a thumbhole stock I made for my Encore.  The stock bolt was going in the frame too deep.  I think I just cut the bolt off.  You might be able to put a washer under the head of the stock bolt.  If you add too much the bolt head will hit the grip cap.  Anyway I think a shorter stock bolt will cure your problem.
God bless

You should be able to add a washer to the stock bolt and cure your problem.

If just one fixed the problem that means you are still close. You wouldn't want the problem to occur in the field. Myself, I would add at least two more washers just for the added security. Or you could probably get by with a 1/4" bolt.

A more permanent fix would be to cut the bolt to proper length.  Chuck it in a vise and cut it off.  I prefer the cut off wheel on my Dremel but a hack saw will do.  Find a nut that fits and run it up the bolt first before cutting, and afterward back the nut off about half way over the end and run back and forth a few times to clean up the threads.  Touch up the sharp end with a file slightly and you're good to go.
