Used barrel prices??
« on: February 23, 2010, 10:01:11 AM »
I just bought my first Handi Rifle and found my way to this site. There is tons of great information here I am glad I found it. I forsee alot of fun with my new rifle (7mm-08).

My question is, I have looked on the NEF web site and see the prices for new barrels are appx $96 dollars plus $15 dollars fitting and then shipping costs. After checking the classifieds here, I notice used barrels going for about the same if not slightly more....what gives?

In my mind used barrels should go for $60-$80 max delivered. If not, why would I choose a used one over a new, factory fitted barrel for damn near the same price?

Not tryin' to raise anyones ire....just curious how the used Handi barrel market holds such good value.

Regards,

Josh

Download the acc barrel order form, you'll find the cost is considerably more after adding the $25 fitting fee and $19 return shipping fee, plus tax and the cost of shipping your frame to them, that $96 barrel costs about $160! And the fact that they have no centerfire accessory barrels available until April makes second hand barrels that more inviting.

btw, the site is H&R, not NEF, you'll be hard pressed to find NEF on the site any more, all of their single shots are H&R, have been for about 3yrs now, the only NEF products are the imported shotguns.  ;)

Josh:

+1 what Quick said...and if I might add, many here would much prefer not shipping their receiver off for a questionable length of time because it may be their only rifle. Also..some barrels are no longer made and others that their available is unknown or will may be a long time waiting for one which makes them more of a sure thing and in some cases more collectible and so they can sell significantly higher than when they were new.Plus for everyday shooters if the barrel is well taken care of, the break-in period may have been already been done and information can be given as to what ammo/loads shoot well in it,which can save the person considerable time and expense as well.

Food for thought ehh

Thanks for the info guys, that makes a lot more sense to me. I suppose a used barrel with a decent round count in good shape may be worth a bit more than I thought.

Why buy a barrel when you can get a whole gun for a few dollars more?  I tried the multiple barrel thing for a while and got tired of changing them so I go for whole guns now.
