Can I put a BC rear sight on a .45 carbine?
« on: February 23, 2010, 01:35:40 AM »
Well, with these old eyes that's one thing I will have to do, change out the rear sight to a peep.  Of course the easiest thing is to put the 45-70 BC rear on it.  Is the front sight high enough for this rear?  It really looks high in the pics of the carbine, but I won't have my hands on mine until April when I get back in Michigan.  Thanks.  44 Man

I seam to remember a discussion about that very same subject a short time ago, let me look.

OK, It isn't exactly the same, but I think it's heading in the direction you are with your rifle.

I'm sorry, that other discussion is way too much measuring.  I'll see where it shoots and see if I can get a peep into the same hight as the original open sight, if not, then I will have to get the front sight higher.  I don't see where someone has added the BC rear to a carbine and said if it shot within the adjustments, or needed to be altered.  Thanks  44 Man

Thanks Tim.  I was really hoping that I could find a combo where I wouldn't have to mess with the front sight.  Maybe a lyman type peep screwed to the side of the receiver?  44 Man

Like this?.... http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,93577.msg572126.html#msg572126

That would be even higher than if it was mounted on the barrel requiring an even taller front sight.  :-\ To keep it simple, I'd get the $20 WGRS from H&R if you don't already have one, and a Williams dovetail riser and a .375" dovetail blade to fit in it that gives you the .625" front sight height, unless you can find a 3/8" dovetail blade sight that's ~.725" high.

I took the sight blade out of the original and put a peep insert in its place. I made an insert out of a hack saw blade.  its much easier on my eyes. Ill post a pic tomorow. DR

Nice work DR!  I'll definately try that first.  Do you feel it is a little too far from your eyes?  I always thought a peep would work better the closer it is, but I can alway adjust the size of the hole for my eyes.  (Old eyes, ha ha)  Thanks, that's a great idea.  44 Man

Yeah, conventional wisdom says the closer to the eye the better, but you may find that with the right sized hole (dont ere with too small a hole) it will work surprisingly well. For me peeps work best with both eyes open. Grampa's '98 Krag rifle has a peep option on the mil. open sight way up there too, and it has done very satisfactory work for over 100 years.

Im with you , the closer the better but that is where it came. my eyes wont focus on the front and rear sights anymore but this seems to work. if I wear my glasses I can see the rear sight but not the target, without the glasses I can see the target just fine but not the sights. if it ever quits raining Ill find out how well it works.
