Any of you 45-70 handloaders...
« on: February 22, 2010, 05:44:57 PM »
Tried out the Barnes 300 gr Tipped TSX boattail bullet?  It was developed for the .458 socom but seems like a perfect fit in a deep throated handi where oal and shape is not an issue.  Seem to pretty difficult find, but after much searching I finally found a box.  Really anxious to work some loads up with this one.  The tech guy at barnes shared some data with me and high end ruger no.1 loads with this baby are over 2550 fps!  By my estimation thats nearly 4400 ft-lbs of energy!  Ran it through the ballistics program and you can get a 250 yd point blank on a 6" target and still be carrying over 2000 ft-lbs.  I know, i know thats excessive.  But what can i say...im a glutton for punishment :o

I've had some for a few months, but haven't shot em yet, I've shot the 300gr TSX-FB using the Barnes Ruger data w/H4198 in my SS Ultra Hunter, figured I'd use the same data for the TTSX.

yeah, he told me to use tsx data and sent me a pdf file of some loads...must have been from the manual cause it showed several more than their site has listed.  The hottest load was with H4198

Atlaw

Have you done any long range testing with the 45-120? I know you are all about that cartridge, so I am curious as to range and ballistics.

If your using a 45-90 thru 120 your using black powder, and you wont be using a buck a Barnes bullet.

If your using modern powder in a 45-90 thru 120, your using more filler than we are with a 45-70.

You should do a little research before posting statements that aren't necessarily true, these 45-120 loads are ~90% load density.  ;)

Just going off what I hear and read in the BP forums.

I didnt buy a 45-120 for this very reason.

There are plenty of sources on having to fill 120 cases

These loads are all smokeless in modern firearms, Accurate's 5744 data doesn't required fillers, works excellent, loads densities are less than 50%.  ;)

If your filling a 120 case, your using a whole bunch of powder.

Ill stick with the 45-70 case, which I still have to use filler.

I'm happy just to fill my .45-120 cases full to the brim (nearly) with nice fast nitro, in my case H4350 equiv.  Fillers are totally unnecessary.

Here's a bunch of well documented low velocity data using no fillers in the 45-70 as well as many other chamberings.  ;)
