Ron Paul wins this year’s straw poll at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), overtaking Mitt Romney and Sarah Palin as conservatives’ favorite for the 2012 presidential nomination. The only one even close was Mitt Romney

If the Republican party is to ever regain the trust of the American Conservative voter, they must elect true conservative constitutionalists like Ron Paul. They simply cannot afford to back another Liberal Republican like John McCain.

The RNC needs to pay attention to the voters in the Republican party, and polls like this one clearly show how they are feeling..

The voters of that straw poll are folks that are tired enough of the same ole crap, that they attended the convention. They are the minority I fear. I would vote for him, but the rest won't. They will vote Republican REGARDLESS of the candidate, and will switch back and forth until all the good candidates are lost in the shuffle.
I'm not makin too much out of this latest anomaly.

I'd vote for Ron Paul in a New York minute. As long as he could garner some national support. If he is a contender hes got my support and vote. To be a contender he has to be more than a fringe 10%'r. Lets see how he does in some national Primaries, that'll tell the tale! I see no one else rising above the rest at this point. And I'm talking Conservative not necessarily Republican.
I wont vote Democrat and I think third party Guarantees obama 4 more years so Whats left?

I like some of the things he says, but he is not electable.  Frankly, some of the things he says appear to serve only to motivate very small numbers of crazies and that's why he's not electable.

I guess I could be labeled one of the Crazies! Just what are the things he say's that would only attract CRAZIES? He believes in the Constitution, and only votes for legislation that is Constitutional. He is 100% in favor of you and I having the unconditional right to bear arms.........(No one else is) In either party. He believes in the sanctity of life. The list goes on and on!

If Dr. Paul were to run against Obama it would be a clear cut choice as they are at direct opposite ends of the spectrum. Everything one is, the other is not. Obama is a good speaker but has no message. Paul has a good message but is not a good speaker. The American people could never get past that. They need the quick sound bite they can listen to on the run. You have to actually listen to Dr. Paul to hear what he's saying.

I suppose I am one of those crazies and I imagine a lot of us here fall in that catagory. I agree that is why he is probably not electable. To be electable it seems you have to be in the middle then its just more of the same. obama is extreme left I guess people could not see it. As far as Ron Paul being extreme right I would vote for him.

I believe Ron is a fine and honorable man who respects the Constitution. I agree with Oldshooter, if he is in such a position that he has an seriously good chance to be president, I can easily vote for him, even though I have some small reservations concerning his foreign policies. As I have often said; the PERFECT man & PERFECT candidate does not exist...only ONE perfect person ever walked the face this earth !
Rusty hit upon a point that may come into play; that sometimes deceptive quality called "charisma". It shouldn't play as big a part with the electorate as it does...but it sure does. What else can we expect from a public raised upon 30 minute sitcoms & soundbites ?

Dances claims that only talk radio has announced the result of the C-Pac poll, not quite accurate..Fox news has been "out there" with it.

I don't place a great deal of credence with the one straw poll. After all, only 25% of the attendees voted. Considering the rabid, almost cult like following of many Paul supporters, I think we can safely assume that about 100% of them voted. There is still 75% of the convention we haven't heard from..so how do they break down ?

I live in Congressman Paul's district.  I canvas for him, and he is an honorable man.  He is also a strict constructionist, and a Libertarian.  If Paul had his way, the Federal government wouldn't dabble in the majority of issues that it sees as mandates under the General Welfare clause of the Constitution.

That said, 60% of Americans are net tax users (they get more in benefits that they pay in taxes), and they vote.  When these people receiving Government benefits find out that, under Paul, most of them would have their checks reduced or eliminated, they'll vote against him.

It isn't a matter of whether our current tax code is fair, or whether it would be in our best interest to radically change the redistribution of wealth policies of Government.  It is a matter of votes bought and paid for.

Paul doesn't buy many votes, and except for a few well informed people casting in his favor, he won't get many either.

Why don't some of you just come clean and admit that you only vote for "winners"? You sit back and wait to see who is leading in the polls and there is where you put your vote. Then you rationalize by saying "the lesser of two evils" or "my favorite candidate couldn't win so I vote for someone who could defeat so-and-so". Will a decent third party candidate ever win? I doubt it since most people are afraid to make that first leap. They can't vote their conscience because they might not be backing the winner. God help us.

If Ron Paul and Obama were on the same ticket, would 90 percent of voters go for it?

I HAVE ADMITTED IT REPEATEDLY
I dont use your terms, If you are so far back in the stone age that you dont understand the polls and what they mean, why in heck do you vote at all! you cant wish a candidate into office. and if you vote for someone that has no chance you may as well not vote.If you dont understand the concept of primaries and polls then admit it! You keep wishing and i'll keep voting any damned way I please! The answer to your question about a third party candidate is NO, You may not be able to remember Ross Perot, he got us Slick willie! All you purist self rightous wishers vote how you want, but then dont come whining how it didnt work out for you, and blame others for it!

No problem Oldshooter. You vote however you want. We all do. But you can leave the personal "stone age" stuff at the door.  If you want to blame me for Obama getting elected, or Clinton, or even Bush that's ok. If you want to read the polls and vote a popularity contest that's ok too. But bellyaching about someone causing your candidate to lose the election is just ranting.  I remember Perot very well, in fact I am an old geezer and even remember Eisenhower being elected.

No doubt we are wasting our time trying to reason with people of the mind set of O.S.

There is a way some one like a Ron Paul could win a presidential bid!
There are about 127,000,000 registered voters in the USA. If that candidate offered 100.00 to each person who voted for them. They would win by a landslide! Problem is, it would take about 12 Billion to pull it off, and of coarse the RNC or the Donkey party would offer 200.00, and buy it back. (SCRAP MY PLAN)

So I guess with the average mentality of the American voter being what it is...........The good guy is doomed from the start. >:(

If I wanted to voted for the guy that most represented my views, I'd find some way of voting for myself.

If I wanted to voted for the guy that most represented my views, I'd find some way of voting for myself.
That's the problem with the mind-numbing rules some people espouse.  Some say you can't ever compromise your beliefs when voting... some say you can never vote 3rd party.  The problem is that both are strangely trying to remove thinking for the process.  If one guy is right, I'd simply never be able to vote.  I've never met someone other than myself who exactly represents my beliefs.  Despite all the blowhard talk around here, very, very, very few actually support the Constitution and ALL the rights we are granted.  On the other hand if I write off anything but the two major parties things will never change and the entrenchment will only get more ridiculous.

So I'll do what I've always done.  I'll think for myself.  I'll look at each candidate, and I'll pick the one that has the best chance of impacting the country in the ways I want.  Perhaps it’s making a statement in a losing effort.  Perhaps it’s supporting a popular but not perfect candidate.  As the candidates and the country changes; I have to re-evaluate during each election cycle.  It's always seemed so obvious to me, but apparently it's a hard concept for some to grasp.

YEP ALL three OF YOU VOTE AND GO HOME AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS!  Duhhh!

Problem with some old people is that they have a flat learning curve. You see, you wish, and you do the same thing no matter what the facts show,...............there is a definition for that,  its called Insanity. look it up!

One of these days the perfect candidate will surface and you wont vote for him cause although hes just right you wont see it cause he missed just one of your specific points, so you will bow up and rail, and vote for some fool who has no chance, therefore giving evil the win again! I don't have a perfect mind but I can do math, Were you guys chasing your tails during math class.

I'd love to see someone honorable with valid arguments run and win, I just wont wish it and brow beat others to do as I do. I DONT wanna be in your club!

I did not accuse anyone of causing the election to go to obama. I'm just saying do the math, I know that is a strange concept(spelling also seems to be a problem) for some but its needed nonetheless!

Well so far today I have been called self-righteous, ignorant, insane, tail chasing (maybe once upon a time), unable to do math and a bad speller.  (And I can't forget I am also a Beck follower as opposed to a guy who never listens to anyone else speak.) And I still have the afternoon.

I believe you, but I'd like a reference. Can you post a link for that information? I can be real conservative some times and the thought has crossed my mind before that people who get more in benefits than they pay or have paid should not have the same voice as those who do.

Don't worry about it gwhilikerz. He's talkin mostly to me. I think he's frustrated because his liberal candidate didn't win. He says he's tired of my rhetoric, but he never passes up a chance to insult, or attack me, and anyone whom might agree with me, or me them. He's under a lot of stress, and gravity is really jackin with him. He could have the makins of a cyber stalker, but I think it's mostly the frustration. He has very large buttons, and I think he pushes them himself a lot of the time.

Laughable Dee, you whining about personal attacks and frustration, I must be really upsetting you and frustrating you since you see fit to say that I'm not voting like you do because I'm fat, and scared, maybe I just don't see it your way. I have  said  do the math, vote for someone who has a prayer, and that sees things closely to your views of how it should be done, but I understand You will never find the perfect candidate and wouldn't probably know him if you saw him.     I think there is some misunderstanding floating around here. Gwhil said some vote for the one they think will win..I don't believe many here did that. Oldshooter likely voted for the Republican in the last presidential election, simply because even though that candidate was not a good conservative, the choice was after all, between McCain or Obama.
If he were simply watching the polls and voted for the one the polls claimed would win..he would have went for Obama; and nothing indicates that he did. He simply tried to keep Obama from doing...what he is doing now. If perchance McCain had won by Old Shooter's one vote, things would not have been swimmingly warm & fuzzy, but we likely would not be in as bad a fix as we are now.

Dukiller reiterated a point I have continually brought up and nobody takes to task..THERE IS NO PERFECT MAN OR PERFECT CANDIDATE ! Surely everyone realizes that..thus if you vote at all, you are compromising..accepting the lesser of two.

let's look forward a couple years.. to Nov 2012. After a hard fought primary there is left only Mitt Romney. Ron Paul having "fought the good fight" has finally succumbed to the voting process..
Now it is Mitt Romney vs Barack Hussein Obama..will numbers of conservatives refuse to vote and perhaps put Obama back into the oval office, where if nothing else, he can appoint SCOTUS members ..and KILL OUR CONSTITUTION ?
Or, if Ron Paul were to run as a third party (which I doubt, since he respects the Constitution also), would they vote for him even if he was only likely to draw say 9%..just enough to put Obama back in ?

All that being said, I like Ron Paul and will be glad to vote for him if he stands a chance then. I just cannot accept the futility of voting for somebody who CAN'T win..may as well stay home.

Actually I find you predictably entertaining. You can't seem to resist my comments, even though they are rarely directed at you personally. I believe it is you that has the missing goat. Your goat is tied in an obvious manner, and getting it, is done most times unintentionally, most times I am merely stating my opinion like everyone else. It would be fine with me, if you acted like I didn't exist. There are folks here, that I do just that, but I don't believe your capable.
