Opening up after firing

Took some reloads the other day for the .223,44 mag and the .243.Everything went great until I got to the 243HB.I shoot factory 80 grains but recently started experimenting with reloading with 100 grainers.I took 4 different loads before and found 2 that shot resonably well. So I loaded up a recipe with a gradual increases in powder and was suprised to have the rifle  blow open up after  firing.These are nowhere near max loads.After examining the case and no sign of pressue I examined the rifle and found the latch wet with oil.Would this cause the rifle to open?I must have missed wiping it down after last time out hunting(it was raining)Thanks

Yup, other things cause it too, read pop open medicine in the FAQs and Help sticky, the best place for H&R newbies to spend lots of time reading. ;)

That's a real eye opener when that happens isn't it.. :o :o

FWIW...anytime I go hunting or to the range I carry a bottle of rubbing alcohol and some q-tips..I swab the chamber and latch shelf and dry it real good with a few more q-tips before shooting it..I've never had a pop open since I started doing this..even of full ( not recommended max+ ) loads with the 243's I've owned..I have .001 frame gap and 1/8" engagement showing on the shelf..I also polished the bore/chamber well with Flitz before ever shooting..

No one likes to have it happen, but it seems to be no big thing, I have fired a Handi rifle with no latch in it at all and held shut with a rubber band.  It did just fine, your results may vary.  Larry

If you have an ejector those spent cases are hot for a few moments.  Of course I wouldn't know anything about that............ ::)

bearcub, glad you found this place. I bought a 500 S&W that popped open. The local dealer I bought it from said clean it. He had no idea of what to do to fix it. This site taught me how to handle the problem.

This site has also caused to me buy a used Handi for the frame, get my real old hornet to shooting and buy 2, 357 barrels that I have reamed to max and a 20 ga USH, I am also looking for another junk store gun for the frame.

very good and patient people here. (They can be a little abrasive some times but in good humor.)
