I have never done it, but a guy that I know has.  You have to inject every square inch of antler with a preservative, pita.  Not sure what the preservative is but check on this site, I'm sure the answer will be found easily here.

OK, I am a taxidermist and do some animals in velvet.I learned this from a taxidermist in canada that does hundreds of caribou in velvet every year.Make a pickle with formic acid just like you would for tanning capes, put the antlers in there for two weeks then take them out and put them outside where no animals will carry them off.He puts his on the roof of his shop, then forget about them for two months. We were apprehensive about doing this at first but it works fabulous.Doesn't matter if it's cold, hot, rains or snows just leave them out there and leave them alone. We tried using formaldihyde by injecting with a syringe and all the different preservatives for antlers in velvet but this works best.

Thanks for the input catkiller, sounds like a do-able plan!
