336-30-30 new to me
« on: February 19, 2010, 06:47:40 AM »
Was doing some "all of a sudden" plumbing work this am. I had to make
a run to Home Depot and on the way back "had" to drive buy my favorite
gun shop. I walked in the door right into the sights of a 336, gold triger,
no saftey, 30-30, blue is very good no wear at all, butt stock has the clear finish peeling, fore arm is perfect, even still has the brass bead on the front
sight. She winked at me and said "I am lonesome please take me home"
What could i do? Being the nice guy i am i took her home and gave her a warm
place to rest. I had to leave $275.00 for her unpaid rent, but she is worth it
i think. I will strip the clear/yellow off the stock and oil finsh it, so it looks
like the walnut it is. How do i find out her age.

After i ask about the age i found the place to find the Man. date, she was
put together in 1967, and a mighty nice job they did.

Gee, I dunno rex. Reckon that 3030 has enough umph, to kill any of the game we have in the 21st century? I mean it's kinda old. And that rifle. Shouldn't that type of action be in a museum? ;D

Good buy it sounds like.  Consider Minwax Satin Tung Oil Finish.

Well i bought it so it would not get cut up for scrap, don't know if it will work
on anything larger that jackrabbits. I have already got on the intnet and looked at
Lyman 66LA peep sight, don't know if that will work with the front sight though.

If you email em to me I'll post em for ya. Offroader1994 at yahoo dot com

The lyman is a side mount peep, yes? If so, you should be good with the front sight.

Also check out midway usa for the williams peeps. They had em on sale recently for like 26 bucks. I bought two and they are nice

Rex, I've got one with gold trigger and saddle ring I bought as a kid, about 1960.  She looks like new after 50 years and has put a lot of venison in the freezer.  It's one of the rifles I'll never part with.  Good luck with yours.

Rex, good score, I would have done the same thing. If you want a natural look without the shine, try boiled linseed oil. I did one like that and the more coats that you put on it the better it looks. Also, if you ever scratch it, all ya gotta do is put on another coat.

I like the true oil finish on walnut. Looks just like they did in the fifties and forties. Five or six coats hand rubbed on, with a little steel wool in between coats.

Truoil provides a nice high gloss finish.  If you steel wool it you'll have a high gloss finish with a lot of fine scratches in it.  If you want a dull finish that never dries and provides no protection to the wood then boiled linseed oil is excellent.

The Lyman sight should work fine. I have a Williams peep on my .44 Mag. 1894 (built in 1975) and it works with the original sight.
If your 336 is drilled for a scope mount, they now make peep sights that mount to those holes. Be sure to get a dove tail filler for the rear sight dovetail; it looks so much better than an open slot.

I would have thought that a '67 gun would have had an oil finished stock rather than the funky, peeling Marshield. I'm wondering if it has not been refinished. Still a very good buy.  Any Marlin in decent shape under $300 is hard to pass up!

the forearm just looks like the old stocks i remember with no gloss, that is what i want on the butt stock, it has high gloss like most all marlins
i remember i will strip it and try to match the forearms. Their are no scrapes or goughes any where.
will try to get some pics out this week.
It is drilled and tapped for scope, the jyman 66la  fits the side and uses the holes on top best i can tell, guess you can mt. it toward the frt. or rear
of reciever. Iam not going to worry too much about the finish other than having it like i want it, cause it ain't going anywhere.

You take that high gloss off the Truoil shine by rubbing with Greek lava stone. I've used Truoil on several stocks over the years. Some I left inhigh gloss and others I took to a matte finish.

Good "take home".

PICS?? When you have them loaded on your computer in your "my pics" directory or wherever, open a post reply and in the lower left there is a button for additional options. Just follow the bouncing balls and you should be able to post the pics.

That stock has been refinished over the years with something.  Time to strip it off and give it a nice oil finish.

If I remember correctly, there is a a link on the Marlin firearms webpage that will give you the date of production by serial numbers.

Let me see if I saved the link.

Google is our friend...   http://oldguns.net/sn_php/marlinlookup.php

good luck,
doug

Ooops...I reread the post...you found it was a 1967 model, thats great...I have a 1970 Centennial Model.  Same Era, real nice.

I striped the stock Sat. it does not have a mark on it, can't understand
why some one would put what ever that was on it (other than he owned it) ;D
the spacer on the grip was pretty brittle and i managed to break it.
looked on midway and it was back ordered, was on my way the home depot
again to get steel wool and stopped buy the candy store where i found her
mentioned the spacer, another customer that is in the remodeling bus. went
to his truck and got me a peice of cornish from a venition blind, white
plastic. 3/32" thick about 4 foot long. I cut the spacer with my handy-dandy
dremel and it looks like it was made for the 336. Now i have almost 4' of
spacer material.
Ordered a 5D-336 williams sight form midway.
life is good.

rex6666;   You said you found the date for your 336. Can you tell me how and where? I bought a 336T strait grip/lever a few years ago under the same conditions. It was in the corner of a gun shop being treated like a bastard stepchild. It had surface rust all over, bad stock finish, a cheapo scope and was really dirty. I got the diamond in the ruff for 185.00. It had one small rust pit on the mag tube and the rest buffed off like it was never there. The blueing is still real good. I refinished the nice walnut stock and forearm with True Oil and while I was at it I sanded down the forearm to mate to the reciever better. It was filthy. I took it all apart and cleaned it and filed and polished the elevator/follower for smooth snag free chambering of rounds. I have in the past filed down the loading gate arm for easier loading, but didn't need to on this one. I pitched the scope and base and put filler screws in it. I have a Williams peep but I'm still using the factory sights. Still had the front sight hood too, but I  don't use it. It came out real nice and shoots real good. Don't have a picture. Oh yeah, I found some black butt stock spacer blanks that were pretty thick, so I installed one between the butt and butt plate for a little extra length. Used a recoil pad jig for that. I like this one better than a new one. You will too since you fixed it up and made it YOURS. The old ones are nicer anyway.  ;D    God Bless !!

The stock does not have a mark on it, looks like new once i got the finsh
off, they did not remove any thing just coated every thing. After looking at
the stock makes me think they may have replaced the stock, 1967 and not
a mark on it make me wonder. I am putting the tru-oil on her now, one coat last light and a rub
down this am and another coat, this may take a while.
I found the manufacture date at the top of the thread. under who has been
keeping this hid, i think.
I could put one pic up but when i tried to post another i lost that one.
Joe S. was kind enough to help me out.
