Well...I couldn't pass this guy up..Did some trading out at Cabela's this afternoon..Needed some cash for the tax prepairer..but didn't want to come home with out something else besides the cash..This just got traded in..and I figured...well..you know what I figured...

Very nice find, Congrats!! I was just saying today that it's been a while since I've gotten out to Cabelas. Wife's working Saturday so that may just be my chance. I'm still looking for a deal on a nice .45 Colt revolver.
I haven't been able to get to the range since I bought my .45 Colt, the snow is too deep in there yet. I did however take a few shots, out in the field next to my property, just to see how it shot and make sure everything worked. I was using 255gr. Ruger level handloads and I don't believe the recoil was any worse than my .223.

Thanks Blue..You never know what you will run into when your there..

On a bit of a more somber note,they only had 2 new Handi's on their new rack,1 plain Jane 12 ga. and 1 plain Jane 30-06,and the guy behind the new counter really didn't know anything about them or most other rifles they had in stock..They did have 5 of the new CVA Apex's on the rack (nice looking/feeling rifles) but even with those he didn't have a clue,nor did 3 other people working it at that time. This is very strange to me,since I always thought they used folks who actually knew about the sport,not just hire high school kids and those with out a clue

The recoil is very mild even with 300 grain +P loads. Congratulations. Nice one.

I'm shooting factory 250 gr. ammo in mine and think the recoil is mild.

Mac: I just bought one of these little pups myself ($219 at Sportsmans Warehouse!), and it already is one of my absolute favorite rifles. I'm going to throw a Weaver K2.5 on it and see what it can do accuracy-wise, but my first outing with a bunch of assorted handloads -- including smokeless and black -- showed some real promise.

I've noticed the same thing with the counter people at Cabelas. I don't know if they have problems getting really qualified people at the wages they pay or like Walmart they just stopped caring. I've never had that problem with my local gun shop.
Taxes seem to be hitting everyone harder this year, I know I certainly paid more, must be all that middle class tax relief. When Obama spoke of change, he was speaking about what you would have left in your pockets after paying taxes.

I am not sure..I acquired it a long ago. It has some writing etched on the blade supposedly from a Lakota Indian chieftain from around the 20's-30's date. One day I'll take it over to one of the universities and see what is actually written.. The steel in this little blade is exceptional and retains it's edge very well,and the sheath looks hand worked..So...I really don't know..

Darn it Mac, now ya went and got me all worked up for another 45 carbine.

Not really, but it hit the local paper today that Sportsmans Warehouse here in Billings lost their lease and today was the last day they would be open. Went out there and there were more people than for their grand opening in the building. Anyway, wandered back to the gun counter, girl said all firearms are 5% off so I looked and handled a couple but wasn't really interested in em. Started to leave but the girl was cute

and said she was going coyote hunting tomarrow so talked to her a bit and saw a short barrel settin' with the H&R's. Asked for it and yep, it was a 45 LC, looked at the price tag and it said $219.99!

5% off that is a "I GOTTA GET THIS" deal!

Did the paperwork and while she called it in the guy said they had 10% off ammo so got 4,000 rounds of 22's as well. The color on this frame doesn't have any "open" spots where the case coloring didn't take, so all in all, I'm quite the happy camper.

Final price on the 45 was $208.99.

It's an HX serial number. DP

Something tells me that rifle is recoil possessed. You might want to bring it over to Doctor Dinny to rid yourself of the troubles.

Since I know you, I won't charge you a thing to leave it with me for a few months..... That should be enough time to have it reamed out to a less recoiling caliber.

Maybe something like 460 S&W.

Nice looking rifle. If you don't already have any loads or such, I could share some with you since you're so close.

At that price, I had to get another one. I hate to be greedy,

but one of my kids will wind up with it when I'm gone.

If this one has a tighter chamber than my other one, it will wind up a 454 or 460 S&W. With a 45-70, really don't need a 460 but when did need ever get involved with Handi's?

I am totally unsure which way I am going to go with this little guy now that I have it..The 460 would be nice..but.the cost of factory ammo is not something I want to deal with since I'm not wanting to reload for it. I might sell the barrel and send it in for a new 38-55/45/70 BC barrel...or..do something really crazy with a different caliber on the frame all together..I saw a sweet 30-30 awhile back with a BC stock set sitting on a fence pole here on the forum that to me was the cats meow as far as these go..and also a matching stained Manlicher forearm with the BC stock that I really really liked..but I would like to have another 338 cal rifle too..along with a sweet varmint rig..as well as a nice 30 cal...so that's 3 cals to load for and more than enough for me right now.I just don't know...The 338 cal can easily be done..as well as the 30 cal on a rebore which is going to happen..but that 45-120 is sure looking more like a front runner...or even a nice 28" 444 Marlin rebore on the 38-55...Just got to do some more figuring..

The 38-55 barrel was discontinued in 2008 after they finally got the bore and chamber corrected in late 2006/early 2007.

The 38-55 with the 1:18 twist will shoot the std. 250ish up thru 300+ weight bullets and can be loaded to the old 38-55 levels on up thru 38-70 to .375Win. levels. If you consider the bullet weight and velocities, and that the true .38cal. is perhaps a bit better ballistic coefficient per bullet weight than the .444s .430ish
dia. you may not give anything up with a 38-55 chambering. I really like mine, and if as Tim says, you can get a barrel from after the change to the correct chamber, so much the better. It is an under-rated cart. today.
The downside would be if you prefer shorter barrels, but you can bob that TM easily. Id say just try the long for a while to see what you think.

I went to Cabelas today and they didn't have one H&R rifle in their used racks. The racks were full, but no Handis. I guess you must have bought them all out. It wasn't a wasted trip though, I got their last lb. of Varget, some Federal Small pistol Magnum primers, and some Trail Boss to try with the .45 Colt. While there I looked at their .45 Colt handguns and didn't see anything I wanted enough to pay their price. After tossing it around in my head for days, I finally decided on a companion handgun for the .45 Colt BC. It's a Colt SAA clone so it won't handle the heavy loads the BC will handle, but the odds of both guns shooting the same ammo accurately are slim anyway. I ordered a 5.5" barreled Taylor & Co. Smoke Wagon Cattleman deluxe edition. They are made by Uberti and then the gunsmith at Taylor adds custom tuning; custom hammer and base pin springs; trigger-spring at three pounds; jig-cut, positive angles on all triggers and sears for crisp, reliable action; a coil-loaded hand; and wire bolt and trigger springs.. It should match the looks of the BC carbine nicely.

I also saw that Bud's still has the SB1 .357 in stock selling for $227. Unfortunately they are selling the BC Carbine for $399!

That's a nice looking piece there Blue...I looked at a bunch of early Colt's SAA while I was there..and I too couldn't justify their prices..

If I keep this little carbine intact,I'll probably look to find a companion pistol for it as well..I've always had a love affair with good shooting SAA's but,there is only so much money to go around these days...So far I am still undecided about keeping this little carbine intact..while I do love the look and feel of it,just having a safe queen isn't what I intend to do,and I want something I will use often.I'm not into plinking much these days,so it will have to be full house hunting loads whichever way I go with it.

Big Blue, I feel bad for all the employee's that work there for sure. I will be seeing some of those same people at my work after they are done packing everything up to send to their other stores. I work for a private, non-profit agency that helps people in just that situation. Just in the month of Jan. we moved over 81,000 pounds of food through our agency. Over 58,000 # went into food boxes we prepaired for our clients. The rest we distributed to other agencies or put in a "free room" for people to come and help themselves. We also help people with rent, utilities, prescriptions and many other things to help people get back on their feet. As for the business that closed, when ever I was in there, there were more people working than shopping.

The economy is NOT getting better in Montana and I doubt it's better elsewhere. DP

I hope you know I was kidding. I would also feel bad for the employees. I can't imagine trying to find a job in this economy and would probably have to work several to make ends meet.
