Early Christmas present
« on: November 07, 2003, 10:01:17 AM »
I must have been good this year! A friend and I have both been looking for a Ruger GP-100 with 4" barrel to use as a sidearm when we predator hunt. We hunt with shotguns alot and the idea of carrying a short barrelled revolver for the occasional longer shot at coyote or if we ever get lucky and Mr. mountain lion shows up seemed good to us. We have been pricing them new and found that the blued versions can be had for $359 with the stainless going for $399. Well, we ate lunch the other day at a Chinese restaurant right next next to a Sports Authority store here in Arizona. We went to the store after lunch and asked the guy at the gun counter if he had any Gp-100's. He said that a matter of fact he just got one in. We asked how much and he checked the price and told us it was $199.00! I told him he must be mistaken as I'm guessing they paid way more than that themselves. He double checked and asked the manager to check also and verified that they were indeed $199.00! My friend who was there first cried sold! Unfortunately, we were told it was already sold but if we wanted he would call around to some of the other stores in the valley to see if they had any. Well, he succeeded in finding us each one at different stores, put a hold on them in our names and we flew out to get them. I had to drive to a store about 60 miles away for mine and my buddy only had to go about 25 miles but get them we did, $225 out the door. When I got to the store where I got mine I had the manager check it out again as I told him I thought it was priced wrong. He checked at every level he could and came back saying that was the price! I whipped out the plastic and had my GP-100, in stainless to boot. I still think there was a goof up somewhere but I made sure they checked with all their managers before I bought it. Best deal I ever got on a brand new gun!

Years ago I worked for Sports Unlimited (before they became "Jumbo Sports" and then finally folded). Every now and then there would be a computer foul up like that and something would be listed an an incredible price. All the checking in the world will have the same price until the home office discovers the screw up and changes it. It can take days. Usually the store staff grabs up deals like that before the public ever finds them.

Congratulations on your good deal. You tried to tell them. Hey with the money you saved you can get a trigger job and fix that Ruger 40 lb. DA trigger!

Hi Griz, He lives!
Yeah, the store actually had some brand new Ruger 45 autos priced at $225 that the guy working there had put back for himself.  I am not a fan of the auto pistols or I might have picked up one of those too.
Is the double action pull out of line on these? I think the single action trigger pull is pretty good. Not sure if I would know what a good double action trigger should feel like. What should a trigger job on a GP 100 cost?

Rugers are great guns but they are famous for their heavy triggers. It's a liability thing. The cost will depend on your gunsmith. One old trick some of them do is cut off a couple of coils on the main spring and call that a trigger job. A real trigger job involves smoothing all those little do-giggers that rub against other do-giggers and that takes a little time and effort. It's been a while since I had my DA Ruger worked on, but I think it was about $60. I also lightly took a file to the top of the hammer. When playing around I shoot single action (99.9% of the time) and that Ruger hammer would just rub my thumb raw. Wish I could weld a Colt hammer spur on it! But since I can't I just lightly smoothed out some of those teeth. My thumb thanked me. You can also order a spring kit from Midway that will reduce the effort needed to cock your gun giving you a smoother, easier double action pull. I haven't done this yet, but maybe some of the other guys around here can fill you in on these better than I.

Enjoy it! You've got a great little firearm there, and a great deal on the price makes it even sweeter.
