Handiholic questions
« on: February 12, 2010, 02:00:12 PM »
1.)  Is it possible to be a true handiholic if one also owns a Rossi breakopen gun (Muzzleloader)?

2.)  Is it possible to be a true handiholic if one DOES NOT own a 45/70 BC or Handi?

I need the correct answers to justify to my wife the acquistion of a 45/70 and a Huntsman MZ.

thanks

RIP Tom: Tom Nolan, ( bikerbeans) passed away this afternoon (02-04-2021).

Why be difficult, when with a little extra effort you can be impossible?

Well since you are looking for a specific answer, then the answer is NO.
You need both a 45-70BC and a 45 Colt carbine.
And if you are going to own a front stuffer than it too needs to be a handi to keep your rank of Handi hallic here.
Or do we need to have a differnet section for those that have
a Handi BC, carbine, at least 10 other calibers, 20 ga, 12,  rifled shotgun, and a front stuffer and uses Each of them 4 times a year, to be a "master Handi owner" .

You MUST have both BC's if you are to be a true Handiholic.  With just one, you won't need group intervention or therapy.  With just one, you're still on the wagon. Or is it off the wagon?  Whatever, get both guns or forever want both guns.

Having a Rossi is nothing to be ashamed of. I've got two of 'em and they shoot just as good as my Handi's.

I think I would like to try a centerfire Rossi at some point.  Just for the fact that I really like my 'old' 158 30-30 because it is so 'light and handy'.  My newer guns with the heavier profile barrels are much heavier.  I don't want a .243 at the moment, so I'm not shopping for a light wt Handi.  But the Rossi's are intriguing as they are much lighter yet.  So I'd like to try one sometime in a big game caliber.  Just some of the thoughts rattleing around in my head.  44 Man

I don't know about BC's But I have a 45-70 manlicher on it's way from washington and just happened into a trade deal for another 45-70 a couple days ago. Now if thats not a sign of Handi-Holic addiction I don't know what is, and yes I own a Rossi ss 357 carbine and wouldn't give it up for the world.

I have had the Rossi's in my hands many times, NEVER has doing so resulted on my purchasing one... If you wanna try one go for it. Doesnt take away from anything, sans you bank balance.  ::) ;D

Now the 45-70 is a corner stone of the handi philosophy. So YES YOU NEED ONE!! Just as you NEED a 357, a 30-30!!

So IMHO the answers to your question are 1) YES and 2) NO.  ;D ;) :D :o

Yes there is life without a 45-70 ;D
As far as owning a Rossi
There is nothing wrong with it It just depends on your personal tastes in a fire arm.

I believe that you could maintain your standing with a 38-55 TM in place of the 45-70 BC (at least with me). As regards a Rossi, having one isnt quite like getting married to it, I wont hold it against you for dating for a while.

I like my Rossi MZ because I can shoot 1" groups @ 100 yds, but IF I can get a H&R MZ that will shoot as well then the Rossi may go to my son's gun collection.   I do keep the Rossi in the far end of the gun safe so it doesn't contaminate my Handis.

I like to plink with buckhammer slugs, in a fairly light beretta 303 without a recoil pad, so I think the 45/70 would fit right into this type of shoulder abuse.   Besides the gas checked 405 grain lead 45/70 slugs at the local gun shop look really cool and I need a reason to buy them.

Now to convince the Mrs. that I an not complete without these two weapons.  45/70 make her a nice Valentine's day present?

Any Handi is a good Handi ... I have a .45/70 but am not compelled to get the BC.  My Handi has four barrels.  I once owned a Rossi in .30-06.  It was not a good experience for me.  They had messed up the front screw for the scope mount ... so I could not mount it.  I tried several sets of iron sights and it kept shooting high.  I sold it and I don't miss it.  Maybe other Rossi's fare better (and maybe mine was built on a Monday).

My affliction started with both a 45-70 & 45LC BC in the same week. I have since acquired a 30-30 Handi and look forward to a custom barreled piece in some obscure caliber like 12MM Pin Fire or possibly 505 Gibbs when I want to depart the earthly bounds of this life after touching off that beast..............  ;D I guess the draw for me is getting back to basics and enjoying the rewards of becoming competent with a simple rifle.

I'm not sure I need or even want a .45-70. I have a .44 Mag, a .30-30, and two .223's That pretty much covers all the centerfire rifles I want. I do have 5 12 ga. shotguns and a 20 ga. I think I have all the bases covered unless I get another 20 ga barrel witht he vent rib for my Deluxe.

In my opinion, "Handiholic" is not a diagnosis made by a Doctor of Handiology, or any outside person. One may be labeled Handiholic by someone else, and may be told, by others, they need treatment or support for the condition. However, as far as I have been able to tell Handiholic is a self definition. When you decide you are a Handiholic, you become one. When you start hanging around this forum, you are simply accepted as one of the brotherhood. There are no T-shirts or membership card, you just kind of find yourself  with another way to define yourself.

It's kinda like "redneck". In my books, if you think you are one, you are one. I consider myself a redneck even though I am pretty well educated, live in suburbia, like cats, own a Subaru, and an Apple computer. I don't work in the fields, or woods, don't drive a truck, or live in a trailer. I don't have a southern accent, I only moderately like grits (much prefer oatmeal), haven't got a hunting dog, never shot a wild turkey (one my life's regrets  :( ). And none of that matters. I consider myself a redneck (and so do some others), because I like my guns, I like my freedoms, I like country and western (and other) music. I believe in "live and let live". I eat what I shoot. I disagree with most of what the "urban elite" consider the best way for this country to be, and I will never ever vote for anyone who likes to screw with freedom for the individual, and wants to remove limits on government power.

*Full disclosure: I am a Handiholic. I own a 30/30 H&R 158 (see my avatar), a 357 mag Handi Gun (made into max), 2x .22LR Sportsters and an SB2 frame with a .22 Versa Pack barrel. Extra barrels: 223 bull barrel, 308 standard contour and 20 ga. At one time I owned 8 or 9 Handis. I have owned a 45LC and a 45/70 both of which I sold (though I kept the 45LC stocks for the frame with the Versa Pack barrel). I even went so far as to purchase the domain www.handiholic.com and put up a website there for awhile. I still own the domain, but I have taken down the site since I had too much other stuff to do to maintain it.... so bottom line even though I personally do not currently own a 45/70 or 45LC  I have no hesitation calling myself a Handiholic and I have no desire to 'recover' from it. No 12 step program for me, no 'interventions' required.

I own other firearms besides Handis... and that changes nothing. I am content to be afflicted with more than just the Handiholic condition.

So welcome bikerbeans - from my perspective you demonstrate enough characteristics to be considered a Handiholic. Buy your lovely wife that 45/70 for Valentine's Day. She will understand...

Cheers
Kerry

BTW, you dont have to shoot a Wild Turkey, drinking some is OK too (after a good day of shooting).

Tally Ho,

ditto on the "redneck" status and eating what you shoot.

I have shot one wild turkey, the first morning time I ever hunted them.  Also was the last time I hunted turkey, two many bugs in the spring.  If you hunt in Ohio I know several areas of state land that have good turkey populations if you are looking for a place to hunt these birds.

Wife opted for chocolate instead of the 45/70, but I am still working on the acquistion.  Looks like another safe queen may be headed to the auction block.

... actually I have never developed a taste for whiskey (or whisky - to my Scotch drinking father's disappointment.) - but I do get your point.  ;)

Not surprised - chocolate is pretty hard to resist... and it seems more likely a wife will be a chocoholic than a Handiholic. As long as you share with each other, all is well.  ;D

I just finished loading over 1,000 rounds for a 223 Handi.  I think maybe the disease has progressed a stage or two.  How long does it take to shoot 1,000 rounds in a single shot?

Not as long as you hoped especally if you have a 14 year old boy.  Somehow he thinks leaving the range with any ammo is a SIN.

My 26 year old son still believes taking loaded ammo home from the range is a mortal sin.  I guess I should have bought carbide dies for the 223.

Oh no, I haven't got my first 45/70 and now I  have to start looking for a second?

1.)  Is it possible to be a true handiholic if one also owns a Rossi breakopen gun (Muzzleloader)?

2.)  Is it possible to be a true handiholic if one DOES NOT own a 45/70 BC or Handi?

I need the correct answers to justify to my wife the acquistion of a 45/70 and a Huntsman MZ.

thanks

1) Yes..it is entirely possible to be a Handiholic and still own a Rossi...Owning one will give you an appreciation for any Handi you might have or get.. :P (just kidding Rossi fans...just kidding) FWIW...You should also try to own as many different styles of rifles as SWMBO will allow you (or that you can sneek in  ;) ;) ;) )

2) Yes..it possible I don't and I have had them for a long long long time. You should try to at least pick up a barrel for one by trading...or if nothing else..get someone close by to shoot one...They are fun to shoot..That's why so many of these nuts...errr fellow handiholics here have them...I've owned quite a few 45-70's before..H&R's..CVA's...Marlin's they are all good..

3) There's never any correct answer to give SWMBO..I've found for atleast myself..it's better to not say anything than try to explain what I am doing with my guns..mine just found out I was already trading my 45 LC forearm for a BC forearm..and mine isn't 5 hours old... :D I just said " Why ask Why Babe..you'll just shake your head in disbelief anyway..."
