Blues Brothers: one funny movie
« on: February 10, 2010, 11:10:26 AM »
I realize it was made about 30 years ago, but I had never seen it before this weekend. The Blues Brothers is one heck of a funny movie. I'd like to watch it again. It's got the comedy car chases, two characters that manage to anger everyone they come in contact with except for a loyal few, its got the bizarre revenge seeking former girl friend, it's got Nazis and cops and country musicians. And it has an amazing cast of top musicians of the day. Those musicians that were part of the band in the movie were some of the top rhythm and blues musicians of the day.

I like the part where the band sets up at the redneck bar, and when they start playing a rock-n-roll-blues song, the rednecks start screaming and throwing things in disgust at the band. Then the band switches to, "Stand by your man," and the redneck crowd starts crying and dancing and is wowed by the band. :D

Several scenes in that film were shot near my home growing up.  The beach scene was shot at the now defunct Phil's Beach in Wauconda, IL.  The car wreck scene where John Candy ends up harpooning the tractor/trailor was shot on the NE corner of US12 & IL 176, also in Wauconda.  It's quite the trip down memory lane for me. I was a student at Wauconda High at the time.
The Nazi march was based on a real incedent in the predominately Jewish suburb of Skokie, IL. Apparently the IL Nazi Party pettitioned the court for and were granted the right to demonstrate.  It caused quite a stir, as I recall.  I want to say it was in 1978 or so.

For me the most hilarious part of the movie was when Carrie Fisher has Jake and Elwood cornered in the tunnel. All he does is remove his sunglasses, looks her in the eye, raises an eyebrow...AND SHE MELTS! Oh. Jake, Jake honey. LOL!!!

P.S., Permission to use unnecessary violence in the apprehension of the Blues Brothers has been approved.

I like the Carrie Fisher character too. She's only in the movie for maybe 5 minutes but it added so much.

I am also amazed by the cast of great characters they were able to hire for to be in the movie.
