Problem with new barrel
« on: February 10, 2010, 08:01:56 AM »
I got a new Super 14 .22 barrel for my tender. When I put it on, I cocked it and as soon as I pulled the hammer back, it just released and wouldn't cock. I have an oversized hinge pin on it, but it works fine with my other barrel. What could the problem be?

I am not sure but could just need a little cleaning. I had one like that and the screw that lets trigger go forward was too tight and made it a hair trigger. I backed it off a little and worked fine. but that may not be your problem.

When the hammer comes down is it all the way down against the frame/firing pin or is it resting on the hammer block safety?  If it's number two, the locking bolt is not engaging far enough to disengage the safety and allow the hammer to cock.  Try shutting the action with a little more authority or it may be necessary to polish the engaging surface of the bolt.

When I pull the hammer back, I get it about 1/8th of an inch and it clicks and doesn't catch. On the way back down, it rests against the firing pin, just like you pulled the trigger.

Thanks for all the help guy! I took a rag and wiped everything off. Now it's only doing it every once in a while, so I think I'll wipe it down one more time and it should be good. Thanks for the input

Had that happen to me, in my case it was the screw that held the inter-lock that had backed out. Tightened it up and it was back in service.

I have owned all of the first three models. Have never owned the 4th mod. The only one I have had that that happen to is the third mod. It pleged me for quite some time. I finally had to take it apart and clean it real good. It is a somewhat tricky action to put back together. I found that down in the bottom of the hammer well and where the hammer blocking device drops down gets some kind of build up and won't let all the parts function properly. I think using oil down it that area may not be a good idea but I am not sure of that.
