Im getting ready to work up a load in my 223 Handi Rifle for them this summer.  Was using 60gr HPs on them, but want something that is going to break up easier.  Going to give some 55gr Blitzkings a whirl.  I got a bud that has a Rem 700 SPS Varmint in 223.  I loaded up some blitzking tack drivers for him.  He is drooling at the mouth to try his hand at some GHogs.
It's all a hot mess...........

Hey woodchukhntr, where in CNY are you located.

I'm down by Cortland and when summer comes I am going to try to get on some farms around here to take some groundhogs.

We have loads of Coyotes here though.

sitdwnandhngon,

I'm near Utica.  Are you thinking of getting together for a 'chuck safari?  I haven't got any farms around Cortland, although I've hunted around Deruyter in my younger days.  I'll PM you.

I still hunt them here in NE Pennsylvania but had to change our modis operendi.  Because of all the homes being
built I can no longer sit and pop them off at 300+ yards.  Now I stalk and shoot with my .17HMR or my .22 mag.
I bought a walking stick/shooting stick and it helps a lot.  My buddy and I hunted together on his farm last summer with the stalk and shoot method and did we ever have fun.  Success rate is not that impressive but what
a challenge getting close enough for our rimfires to pop em.  My 6mm Rem Model 788 hasn't killed a groundhog in quite a few years.  When hit correctly, the .17HMR and .22 RFM can be surprisingly effective.

I hunt them at my inlaws.  Two years I ago I had just finished sighting in my 30-06 and I saw a woodchuck.  You ever see a woodchuck fly? I did.

I hunt wood chucks from my deck as they forage in my garden. I live at the edge of town with a wooded valley behind me, not many Yotes to keep them in check. My best count one season was 11. I guess I made dent in the population because last year I only got 2, but I got LOTS of veggies!!! Oh Yeah, I started with a Benjanin in .177 and now use a Gamo Viper, .177, scoped. One head shot usually puts 'em down....Ed

Remember all your favorite parking spots? Well it seems like every one has a big new house there and the same for chuck hunting spots. As we call them theres to many gentelmen farmers from the city that cry foul any time they hear a shot. I use my old 1971 .17 Rem 700BDL. Here in Ohio the old chucks are quick so you need a fast rifle and the .17 is that. At 150-300yds I'll ask anybody with me right front tooth or left. For real long range shootin my bud took a chuck at 700yds. with a 77V 220 Swift topped with a 20X 3200 Redfield. Have a good spring chucking!
RIP Mike. Died on July 14th, around 2am, with his family at his side, he went peacefully to be with god.

As a teenager it was one of my favorite activities. Here in southern Worcester County and northeastern Connecticut there were a multitude of places to hunt woodchucks. Then things changed. More of the small pastures and dairy farms that seem to dot the landscape were developed. Many places that I hunted were now the sites of large suburban homes and then more of the open land became posted. Another factor seems to be the coyotes. When they came in on the scene the woodchucks have gone further down the road.

The only place I have seen woodchucks seem to be near homes or on the highway near a lot of human habitation. I would love to go and shoot some chucks with the Contender but in all honesty I would not know of a place to do so in Massachusetts or Connecticut anymore.

From a couple of years ago. These came off the railroad Kudzu. My oldest (in the middle) took all three with his bow.

Here in western NY state, many of the small farms have been incorporated into large farms and not as many small fields are cultivated.
Along with the cattle not being pastured so much, the woodchuck friendly areas are a bit more scarce.  Where this area was at one time completely dairry country, now much is devoted to cash crops..corn, soybeans, wheat, oats etc. and those fields are only woodchuck conducive around the edges, which usually have tall weeds during woodchuck hunting weeks.
When most farms ran from 100-400 acres, there was much open hunting, especially for known, local residents.  Now, with the farm consolidations, many of them are getting into the "hunting lease"   game heretofore played mostly in the south and west.
I have several .22LRs, 2@ ..22 mag, 2@ .17 HMR, 2@ .223 and a .243 all ready for them...but I like to match gun to game.  Close range, 22LR and so forth on up,  as the range increases.
I am the administrator for our local cemetery and the cemetery is  a hot spot for them.  I have secured the permission of any who live within 500 ft (state law), so I keep them cleared out.  Rather than to rub it in, I generally use  subsonics on them there.  I got 9 around the cemetery alone last year.
I have gotten the "season opener" this year, with my new Savage 93, .22 mag.
I'll back off now for a few weeks, since they are breeding now.  I shot one last year which had a "moving belly".. full of babies.. I was angry with myself over that....and rather disgusted.
I cannot imagine what an abortionist must wrestle with , if he/she has anywhere near a normal conscience.

;) Ironglow, glad to hear you are not shooting til the pups are born and out on their own..It used to just kill me to wait til late June to shoot, but I always had lots of chucks to shoot that summer and next year....I do the same with p. dogs here in the west unless they are really a problem..unfortunately we get shooters who kill as many as they can as soon as they can, and wonder why there are no dogs the next season...hang in there you will be rewarded... ;)

I binocked a chuck munching right in front of my 200yd backstop this afternoon.
I'm gonna let it go for a while again but last year I waited too long. Do I really have to wait till late June around here? I think if I see 4 chubby full sized ones sunning on top of the mound again this year I will have to cut loose on them ;D

And you should.  I shoot adults and kids.  The farmers I hunt for want them all gone. Even in the areas that shoot everything, the next year I see fresh dug out holes.

Most farmers around here shoot every woodchuck they see, me included, as they are a real problem around here.  They dig upder the fruit tree's killing the tree, dig under buildings ruining the floor, destroy gardens the other crops ect... ect...

Nothing quite as exciting as dropping a tractor tire in a chuck hole on about a 10-15% grade. What fun ,what fun !!

Yeah GWC...That's when you find out how much "pucker power" you have ! :D

Then there is the time when a hay conditioner or combine cutter head runs into a dirt mound...couldn't you just spit ! >:(

If I had a place to hunt them, I'd hunt them hard. But the farms around here are few and far between, and they would all be unsuitable for hunting anyway. I'd love to hunt them as I hear some folks say they are good eating, and I can hunt them all year round in the varmint season.

I love shooting Rock Chucks in the Mtn canyons.  Problem has been low populations last few years.  They have had a big die off due to K9 diseases.  The HB 25-06 is great up where the wind blows most every day.  We tried cooking some young ones years ago.  That goes under things to never try again. ???

I've seen a few recipes, almost all of them call for a salt water boil first. Gotta make sure to get the stink glands off too.

Can't be any worse than Red pine squirrel. Stringy little buggers.

When I was a youngster, I lived in NYC and a friend would take me to Connecticut to shoot 'chucks and it was great - farms everywhere were lousy with them and no problem getting permission.

Now I live in Connecticut and have bunches of chuck rifles, and the opportunities are few and far between.

Any other Connecticut chuck shooters on this site?

Shot this one in my yard February 5'th which is very early for our area. I think he was a Patriots fan who wanted to end it early... ;) ...

My long range rifle I won in a raffle on a $20.00 ticket, a Weatherby Vanguard package in 22.250 which reaches out very well. I use the white box bulk pack 45 grain bullets, longest shot to date was 167 paces. LOUD!

Good Luck!

I manage to get a few every year.I've tried most everything from 22lr to 30-06.I settled on the 223 round a long time ago(that way I can see my misses).I like 40gr. vmax and blitzkings the best.My average shot is about 150 yards but have managed to connect out to 300.I like to hunt them with my encore.I had a savage model 11 that I used for a long time and like a fool got rid of(bang head),man would that thing shoot.
XLI the one to go with.

Welcome to the forum CatShooter,

I have been a 'chuck' hunter in CT and the New England area since the 1950's.

To me woodchuck hunting was the greatest rifle hunting what with the frequent shooting and the great weather that demanded accurate rifles.

These days I have the time and means to hunt and the chucks are gone.  The coyotes have eaten them.

Someone would say "Well then go coyote hunting."  Well I do but I get few shots.  It's not the same at all.

Here is a picture of what used to be great chuck country.  Now just a few turkeys.

Longest shot for me was 260 yards with a 223. Here in N.Y. not alot of fields over 300 yards. I just picked up a 280 barrel before deer season so that will a work out with whistle pigs this spring and summer
