Well, I went and did it. Couldn't find a new 45/70 cowboy around here anywhere. Or used. I went on gunbroker with the help of my buddy, buffgun, I finally found a few. Some of them were new but one in particular used one caught my eye. 99% and never fired, but the wood on it is what caught my eye. It should be here in a week or two so these pics are off the gunbroker sight and I'll take more when I get it but here it is.

I have a 444S but if I were to ever get a 45-70 a Cowboy like that is exactly what I would look for. Very nice.

Thanks. I already have two leverguns with scopes. This one is gonna stay with open sights. Maybe a tang sight and a good set of peeps for short range.

Nice buy, that is what I had in mind this Jan. but ran across the new/used 1895 with the half mag. and blued action...since it was a couple hundred cheaper than the new cowboy, I bought it..Shot it in, but no game yet...good luck it should be a shooter....

I'd very much like to have a .45-70 Cowboy with the barrel cut to 20" and a Sims grind to fit recoil pad properly installed.

It should be here by the end of next week. I've got some 405 gr cast bullets that I'm gonna start it off on and see how it does. I've got some soft cast and a few hard cast. IMR 4198 will be my choice of powders.

I think you are going to like the .45-70, it can be loaded up & down to suit & is very accurate either way. Those Marlins shoot very well too.

I had one, with a Marble's Tang on it, and a Lyman 66 aperture. The tang bit me under recoil with heavy loads but, sometimes I wish I hadn't sold it. I have a ton of ammo for one, and brass, bullets, and molds, dies. Great caliber, and rifle.

I got one of the 1st ones a few yrs. ago and it weights 6 1/2 lbs. empty. Most are 7+ lbs.
It likes the Hornady 350 Jac. flat pt. and the 300 gr. RCBS FPGC, both right length for feeding.
Excellent accuracy and great gun to carry. Brian Pierce took one to Africa for Cape buffalo,
Killed his bull with one shot and also killed the one standing behind it, pretty good penetration.

I have a friend that has a CB 45/70, always complaining about how hard it
kicks and showin me his brused shoulder, one of these days if i am give
him room he is going to pop off with a price and i will own that little dumplin.

Nice rifle and a cool sight.I can't wait for a range report!!

I don't understand all the "it kicks too hard" comments from people....you can MAKE it kick hard,but why shoot hard kicking stuff at the range (once it's sighted in). The Remington factory 405 grain and the federal hollow points don't kick at all to me....I hope you end up with that rifle,your friend is insulting her manners,lol

I've got all my mechanic work caught up with the exception of a few hours friday eve and this weekend is free, so barring any unforseen events, I'm a gonna go shootin. Also got sme 30/30 hand loads I need to try out.

i have 2 45/70 handi rifles, all depends on what you feed them. the 325 hornady
will get your atention though. I mostly shoot rem 405 and Buffalo 405, not much
kick there.

I went and shot this lil gem last weekend and I went ahead and used the loads that I've worked up for my guide gun. Wow she is very accurate with these and you can definately tell that you're shootin somethin. Now to get the tang sights put on.

Brian that is a beautiful 45/70, nice wood and I like the looks of the octagon barrel. This is my next quest and a 35 Rem. I am into casting bullets and these seem like a good match as they were design for them. How was your accuracy and what was your load may I ask. I never messed with levers until this year and I am having a blast.

Boondocker, I haven't been reloading for very long and only have three different powders. But the two loads that I have work well for me. The first load was developed for my guide gun, 300 gr hornady jhp with 48 grains of imr4198. The other is a lead cast 500 grain spitzer with 35 grains of imr4198 with LE cases. This one works well in my buff classic I plan on using 405 gr soft cast in my cowboy when I get the chance to load some.

So if any one has any suggestions using either imr4198 or imr3031, I'm all ears.

I looked very hard at the 1895 Cowboy after reading an article about the rifle in "Guns of the Old West" magazine. 8 lbs and a 24" barrel are right up my alley. But $150 for 100 rounds? That compares with $55 for 100 rounds of .45LC. I'm just not keen on going through $75 every time I drive to the range. It's a darned nice rifle, but the 45 70 price stops me.

Oldpuppy, it aint that bad when you reload and shoot cast.
Rex, it won't be one you will regret. I'm really startin to like mine a lot. I got some new leather on her and I'll post pics later.

Brian I have that tang sight, and I Had it on a 4570 Cowboy just like yours. With warmed up loads that sight is gonna bite the hand that pulls the trigger. You may end up having the edges turned down to avoid it.
