Eddie that's why I asked I am sure there are more 1-16 out there but as Tim said no one has reported it but me.
Bigvarmint the articale I read in Varmint Hunter on the testing for the 30gr at 3100fps had no issues with reloading the Hornet brass many times... kind of surprised me also. Sounded like the 6 1/2 primers were essential to the great accuracy he got with that load though. Might take me til spring to try and find some of those though.Kurt

I'm getting a little off topic but here goes. I haven't had time to read my last VH mag. I'll look for article.

I only tested a few and I believe it was getting late in the day for my chrono. to work as only one regestered in the 20" tube at 2840fps with 12 gr Lil Gun 30gr VGs and WSR primers.

The stainless sposed to be 24" same load 3004,3126,2997,3134,2997,AV 3051.
I know from past B.R. primers gave me better groups. SP primers may work. Lil Guns low pressure seems to be better on brass. I used to have brass problems in the past with 110 and 4227. I think the Hornet would shine with 30-40 gr bullets and right combo in older twist rates.

I hope the longer non leads work in the 1:9 as you should be able to keep vel. up and use a longer bullet. The throats prob long enough in Handi. If I need 55+ gr Hornet I'll use next steps up in case size. The Hornet is a blast but I never cared for the case. Problems. Have it reamed to 221FB and you'd have the ideal cart/barrel. JMO. Good Luck!

major snow storms really slow down the progress of everything that a person loves to do.  any how just did the initial pressure tests with hornady 75 grain bthp over 8 gr imr 3031.   absolutley no signs of excess pressure,   didnt get to do any target work yet, that is planned for sunday,  did shoot a few in a piece of firewood at about 20 yds, didnt see any signs of keyholes, but i guess time will tell

Here are the results with different powders.  I'm sorry I could not get the tables and information to line up.  When I copy and paste it gets messed up.  If anyone knows a better way to post it let me know.

Cartridge          : .22 Hornet(.224 groove=custom)
Bullet             : .224, 75, Hornady BTHP M 2279
Useable Case Capaci: 8.250 grain H2O = 0.536 cm³
Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 1.720 inch = 43.69 mm
Barrel Length      : 22.0 inch = 558.8 mm

Predicted Data for Indicated Charges of the Following Powders.
Matching Maximum Pressure: 38072 psi, or 262 MPa
or a maximum loading ratio or filling of 100 %
These calculations refer to your specified settings in QuickLOAD 'Cartridge Dimensions' window.
C A U T I O N : any load listed can result in a powder charge that falls below minimum suggested
loads or exceeds maximum suggested loads as presented in current handloading manuals. Understand
that all of the listed powders can be unsuitable for the given combination of cartridge, bullet
and gun. Actual load order can vary, depending upon lot-to-lot powder and component variations.
USE ONLY FOR COMPARISON !

40 loads produced a Loading Ratio below user-defined minimum of 70%. These powders have been skipped.

Save it as a .txt file using Notepad and attach it using Additional Options to the left below the text box.  ;)

Twist rate is only one of the factors in stabilizing a bullet. Velocity is the second factor needed. A 22 hornet will have a hard time stabilizing a bullet over 55 grains even with a 1 in 9 twist.

It seems I do have some .224 55 FMJ grain bullets for my .223. How about some suggested loads for the .22 Hornet for those? I will be using a Lee Loader for these loads but can wiegh each powder charge...I would like to get some sub sonic loadings as well...Thanks....<><....:)

Barm, The bullets are 55gr WW fmjbt I aquired from a fine member here as part of a barter deal on some stock work. Thank's for the file on the 55 grain bullets, I have printed it out. Do you think the values would be the same for my 55gr WW fmjbt bullets?...Thanks....<><....:)

MSP Ret,

You are welcome.  Quickload lists a Winchester 55 grain FMC, but it does not have the length of the bullet.  If you measure the length I could enter the information and see what it says.

The FAQs pre '87 Hornet twist has a question mark behind it because no one else except Kurt has reported an old Hornet barrel as being 1:16", they may all be, but we don't know that yet, at the bottom of the twist rate list you'll find instructions on how to check it.  ;)

barm,  what great information you posted, thanks.  that fit right into what my string and trigger pressure tests said, your way is much safer though.

i tried loads of 8, 8.5, and 9 gr imr 3031.  the results were the sound of tumbling bullets, they cut perfect keyholes all over the 25 yd target.  still going to play with this some,  try a few other powders   probably winchester 760, and maybe some h110.   also will try bullets down in the 60 - 65 gr category.

FWIW, I never had satisfactory results in any of 3 Hornets with that 'slow' a powder.

I just checked two Hornet barrels I have guys, the first is still a Hornet and is a 2004 production with a 1 in 12 twist.
The second is an older barrel with the early sights. I got it from a member who got it thinking it was a Hornet since it was marked that way. It actually was sold to him with a chamber that was fouled up from a botched attempt at rechambering to a .223, he did not know about the fouled up chamber when he bought it or when he sold it to me and I decided to keep it anyway. After some checking and investigation I sent it to Wayne for his majic and it is now a .22-250. It has the original Hornet 1 in 16 twist that H&R had. And by the way, it shoots surprisingly well as a .22-250 with the 1/16 twist. Factory H&R .22-250's have a 1/14 twist....<><....:)

Sabbatus,

I'm glad you could use the information.  I'm very interested to see what the heavy bullets in the smaller case can do.  Keep us posted on what you find out.
