Wolf .223 JHP performance?
« on: February 02, 2010, 01:47:44 AM »
Any feedback on Wolf hollow point ammo?  Accuracy?  Do the hollow points open like they should?

I know that cheap ammo is never going to be premium ammo, I'm just wondering about picking up some of the Wolf to keep on hand.  The JHP is the same money as the FMJ, so if it expands and has reasonable accuracy I could have some ammo with some practical usability.  If I get some for plinking, will it be suitable for anything more than just blasting off?  Could I reasonably expect to use it on a live animal at reasonable distances with humane results?

  Thanks for any input.

If your talking the cheap black box Wolf , they don't expand much . Accuracy isn't the best , but I do keed several hundred rounds of it around . I shoot it out of my AR's regularly and am happy enough with it for cheap plinking. I do prefer the polymer coated stuff over the old military classic .

The cheap 62 and 75 grain black-box wolf ammo I shoot in my AR and Savage gives me 2 to 3 inch groups.   Both these guns are half inch shooters.  As for expansion I don't believe there is any.  I shot them in phone books and they acted about like fmj's.  This was a few years ago and my memory isn't the greatest so maybe others have had different results.  I believe wolf made them to be allowed on shooting ranges since most won't allow fmj's.  I've never used them on any game so I can't say for sure on their performance, but I suspect you would get a 22cal exit wound.  Dave

I've used the wolf steel cased, 52gr hollowpoint quite a bit. I had a bolt gun and it would shoot the winchester white box 223s into dime size groups. The wolf shot from the same gun were quarter size. Fine for plinking. I also used it in several mini 14s and 3 different ar15s.

While not the most accurate load,it was fine for plinking. I have not hunted with it so I don't know if the hollow point works or not. But out of the 2,000rds I've fired it always goes bang and hits the target. Not bad for the price.

My AR shoots MOA with the 62 gr wolf ammo.  I just don't like the military classic stuff.  I think it leaves too much lacquer and fouling in the chamber, but that's a trade-off you get with the cheap ammo.

If you are just plinking with this .223 ammo, the Wolf and the Silver Bear are the way to go.  I agree with Clemens on the trade off for cheaper ammo. I have use both and I have found that the Silver Bear has tighter groups. Both are consistently accurate, if you are Ok with 2" groups at 100yds. The price is close to the same and both are Russian Manf. The Wolf is a good ammo too, and I have shoot it for a while now.  I have used it hunting deer and coyote and I have had no problem in bringing down the game with this HP ammo. I will tell you this, both rounds of HP ammo will go straight through a 1/4" sheet of steel with no problem and leaves a 30 caliber size hole. It want go through 1/2 sheet though. Out of the two, I would recommend the Silver Bear .223 at 62grain HP from www.ammunitiontogo.com.

I`ve never shot any, but ask a guy that was selling it how it expanded and he said just like the FMJ bullets. Not a hunting bullet.

Actually I recently tested some of the 62 grain HP rounds from Brown Bear. I would say that at close range they will fragment, not into really small pieces but into "chunks", the jacket tearing apart, flattening and losing it's core. Interestingly I have had the same thing happen with some of the 55 gr. FMJ ammo that you can get.
